Job summary

Impossible Cloud in Hamburg seeks an experienced Platform Engineer (Sr / Staff / Principal) to design and implement the architecture that powers our distributed cloud platform. You will enable developers to deploy services securely on a scalable system supporting core business data and storage functions.

You will set up and optimize Kubernetes clusters, deploy core services, harden security, build CI/CD, and lead multi-site deployments as we expand.

Qualifications

• Experience with distributed storage systems (Ceph) and modern distributed databases.
• Proven track record deploying and maintaining Kubernetes clusters at scale.
• Hands-on with infrastructure automation and deployment tools like ArgoCD, Flux, Terraform.
• Knowledge of DevOps practices and tools (GitOps, IaC).

Responsibilities

• Set up, maintain, and optimize Kubernetes clusters for availability, scalability, and reliability.
• Deploy and maintain Kubernetes core services (ingress, secrets, CNI/CSI).
• Design and maintain a robust Kubernetes network for secure inter-service communication.
• Enforce security best practices within Kubernetes clusters to protect infrastructure.
• Build, maintain, and optimize CI/CD infrastructure.
• Deploy and maintain large-scale storage and database systems to support data services.
• Lead deployment of new sites, regions, and environments from the ground up.

YOUR IMPACT

To meet our ambition, we must push distributed systems beyond what people consider possible! As an experienced (Sr / Staff / Principal) Platform Engineer, you will design and implement the technical architecture and enable developers to deploy services seamlessly on a scalable platform that supports the core components of the business.

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL

• Setup, maintain, and optimize Kubernetes clusters to ensure availability, scalability, and reliability
• Deploy and maintain essential Kubernetes core services, including ingress, secrets management, and CNI/CSI
• Design, implement, and maintain a robust Kubernetes network, ensuring secure and efficient communication between services
• Implement and enforce security best practices within Kubernetes clusters to protect critical infrastructure and applications
• Build, maintain, and optimize CI/CD infrastructure to streamline the deployment
• Deploy and maintain large-scale storage and database systems to support business-critical data services
• Lead the deployment of new sites, regions, and environments from the ground up, ensuring rapid and reliable availability
• Maintain, upgrade, and enhance existing infrastructure through continuous development, monitoring, and iterative improvements

YOU COULD BE A GREAT FIT FOR THE ROLE IF YOU HAVE

• Experience with distributed storage systems, such as Ceph, and modern distributed database solutions
• Proven track record of deploying and maintaining Kubernetes clusters at scale
• Hands-on experience with infrastructure automation and deployment tools like ArgoCD, Flux, Terraform
• Knowledge of modern DevOps practices and tools (GitOps, Infrastructure as Code, etc.)
• Proficiency in designing and maintaining service-defined networks within Kubernetes, e.g., service meshes like Istio
• Strong understanding of Kubernetes security best practices (RBAC, network policies, etc.)
• Proficiency in AWS and GCP cloud platforms, leveraging their services for enhanced scalability and redundancy
• Strong skills in Linux environments and shell scripting for automation and troubleshooting, with experience in Golang being a plus
