Role Overview
We are seeking a practical, hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer with strong expertise in mechanical design to contribute to the design, optimisation, and dependability of production equipment within a regulated manufacturing environment. This position is centred on the technical advancement and ongoing enhancement of manufacturing equipment and mechanical systems.
You will work closely with the engineering and R&D teams to take ideas from the concept stage and turn them into detailed CAD models and manufacturing drawings, supporting the handover of designs into manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
- Take mechanical design concepts from the engineering team and develop them into detailed CAD models and manufacturing drawings
- Work closely with R&D and engineering teams on the design of new equipment, components, and product-related hardware from concept through to production
- Improve and optimise existing production equipment to increase performance, reliability, and maintainability
- Support the development and rebuilding of production equipment where required
- Review and validate designs and technical deliverables from external suppliers and partners
- Work closely with manufacturing, process engineering, quality, and operations teams to resolve technical issues and implement effective solutions
- Support the integration and commissioning of new equipment and production lines
- Maintain technical documentation relating to designs, drawings, BOMs, and equipment changes
Candidate Profile
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, or a closely related field
- 3+ years of relevant industry experience, with direct experience in mechanical design
- Strong ability to take concepts from the idea stage through to detailed design and manufacturing
Required Skills & Experience
- High proficiency in SolidWorks / CAD, with SolidWorks preferred; NX experience would also be relevant
- Experience creating and releasing manufacturing drawings
- Good understanding of manufacturing processes and how to design for manufacture
- Experience improving equipment design and resolving issues with existing equipment
- Ability to work effectively with internal engineering, R&D and manufacturing teams
- Experience working with external suppliers or technical partners
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with a focus on continuous improvement
- Comfortable working within a fast-paced, international, multidisciplinary team
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Experience in medical device manufacturing or another regulated industry
- Experience with both medical device design and production equipment
- Experience with different types of manufacturing processes
- Simulation experience, such as FEA / structural or thermal simulation, including SolidWorks Simulation or similar
- Lean manufacturing or Six Sigma qualification (or equivalent practical experience)
- Experience with DFM/DFA and FMEA
- GD&T / tolerancing expertise
- Experience with additive manufacturing / 3D printing
- Experience working with external suppliers on larger technical projects and equipment integration
- Device programming experience would be advantageous but is not essential
- German language skills would be advantageous
