Job description

Building an inclusive and resilient coastal economy through strategic outreach

The Island Coastal Economic Trust invests in coastal communities to develop a resilient economy that strengthens the well-being of all people and the environment. Over the years, the Trust’s role and its programs have continuously evolved to meet a wide range of stakeholder needs. To date, they have invested $67 million in communities, with a total investment impact of $370 million, creating approximately 3,001 permanent jobs.

The Trust was established by the Province of BC in 2006 with $50 million under the North Island-Coast Development Initiative Trust Act. Its mandate is to support economic diversification and innovation in partnership with communities across Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, and islands and inlets from the Salish Sea to Cape Caution. In 2020-21, the Province expanded the Trust’s service area to include the Capital Regional District electoral areas of Juan de Fuca, Salt Spring Island, and the Southern Gulf Islands. With half a million residents, the region fosters high-trust relationships with people and organizations in urban and rural areas, including those on islands and in coastal inlets. The Trust partners with First Nations, municipal, regional governments, industry, and non-profit organizations.

The Trust focuses its investments across eight impact priorities: Food Security and Agrifood, Cultural and Nature-based Tourism, Innovation and Technology, Renewable and Low Carbon Energy, Entrepreneurs and Local Businesses, Transportation and Logistics, Training and Advanced Education, and Regenerative Forestry.

The Opportunity :

The current Communications & Impact Manager is moving on to an exciting new opportunity, creating space for a new communications professional to join the team. The new manager will work closely with management, colleagues, local, regional, and First Nation governments, social purpose organizations, industry partners, and the Province.

Reporting to and working closely with the CEO, the Communications and Impact Manager proactively coordinates the Trust’s communications efforts. This includes responsibilities for external communications, such as writing compelling stories about the positive impacts and wellbeing outcomes of Trust-partnered projects, coordinating contractors, supporting strategic outreach efforts, engaging local and regional media, and related duties.

This role integrates internal and external strategies to raise awareness of the Trust among all levels of government, community residents—including First Nations, rural communities, and urban centers—and existing or potential partners. The role also supports continuous learning and knowledge sharing for all stakeholders.

The Manager will be a key member of a small, collaborative team fostering a high-trust environment within the Trust and with partner communities and organizations. The role involves partnering with graphic design & web development agencies, print services, freelance writers, and photographers.

Our Ideal Candidate :

The Trust seeks someone passionate about storytelling and social media to promote community-based work, who is also comfortable with data management, website content maintenance, analytics tracking, and representing the Trust at events. The candidate will support the CEO, CFO, and Manager of Programs & Corporate Affairs as needed.

Qualifications include:

  • Experience in multi-faceted communications, public relations, or marketing roles, including working with external contractors.
  • Ability to conduct interviews and translate them into compelling stories, similar to website content.
  • Experience with online content management systems like WordPress.
  • Knowledge of MailChimp or similar email distribution systems.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, photo editing software (Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom), and CRM software.
  • Experience managing social media accounts and creating graphics using Canva or InDesign.
  • Strong writing, proofing, and editing skills for diverse audiences.
  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in marketing, communication, journalism, or related fields, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working with coastal First Nations or Indigenous communities is an asset.

Ideal candidates are relationship builders with curiosity, active listening skills, confidentiality awareness, passion, and a commitment to quality communication materials.

Compensation :

Salary ranges from $80,000 to $90,000, based on experience. The role includes participation in the provincial government pension plan, a comprehensive benefits package, four weeks of holiday, sick leave, and personal days.
