Title: Public Health Nurse

Department: Tsuut’ina Health and Wellness Services

Reports to: Public Health Coordinator

Designation: Full‑Time

Job Summary:

Tsuut’ina Health and Wellness Services is seeking a compassionate and community‑focused Registered Nurse (RN) to join the Child and Maternal Health and Public Health teams. This role provides home‑based prenatal and postnatal care to families within the Tsuut’ina Nation, supporting maternal and child health through clinical assessments, health education, and connections to community and social services. Working in collaboration with the Public Health Team, the RN will also support immunization programs, health promotion initiatives, and disease prevention activities that strengthen overall community wellness. This position emphasizes building trusting relationships with new and expectant parents, empowering families through education and culturally safe, respectful care. The ideal candidate will demonstrate professionalism, clinical competence, and a commitment to advancing the health and wellbeing of Tsuut’ina Nation citizens.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Program Planning, Evaluation, and Professional Practice – apply nursing knowledge and critical thinking to plan, implement, and evaluate programs and interventions addressing community health issues. Make evidence‑based decisions in program development, planning, and priority setting for individuals, families, and the broader community. Interpret and communicate health information. Ensure compliance with legislative, professional, and privacy requirements to protect client safety and confidentiality. Promote professionalism, integrity, and ethical practice within the Health Centre.
  • Clinical and Direct Care – conduct comprehensive maternal, newborn, and child health assessments. Conduct home visits with pregnant individuals and families from prenatal to early postpartum stages. Provide evidence‑informed education and guidance. Deliver primary disease prevention. Provide basic first aid and collaborate with the Health Centre team to ensure emergency care is provided to the nearest suitable medical facility. Participate in maternal and infant health programs. Support child health programs.
  • Public Health Promotion and Disease Prevention – lead the delivery of health promotion, prevention, and harm reduction programs across all age groups. Provide health screening opportunities on Nation. Conduct regular surveillance for communicable diseases to identify potential outbreaks and emerging trends. Record all communicable disease control activities. Educate the community on communicable disease control and outbreak prevention. Advocate for and participate in public policy development and services.
  • Community Engagement and Capacity Building – involve individuals, families, and the community as active partners in addressing health inequities and promoting self‑management of care. Apply culturally relevant and appropriate approaches when building relationships and providing nursing services. Incorporate diverse health practices in conjunction with western health care methods where appropriate. Build capacity and enhance team performance. Participate in collaborative, interdisciplinary, and intersectoral partnerships to improve community health outcomes.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Desired Education, Knowledge, and Experience:

• Current and active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is required.

• Current CPR – HCP Level Certification is required.

• Knowledge of prenatal and postnatal care, early childhood development, and family‑centered care principles.

• Knowledge of Indigenous health care, wellness models, and the impacts of colonialism and social determinants of health.

• Knowledge or background in Tsuut’ina culture and language considered an asset.

• Two (2) years of nursing experience in public health, maternal‑child health, or community nursing.

• Proficiency in clinical documentation, case management systems, and electronic health records.

  • General Employment Requirements:

• Valid Driver’s License, and reliable transportation.

• Criminal Record Check, and Vulnerable Sector Check.

• Oath of Confidentiality.

• Indigenous Ancestry, and fluency or familiarity with Indigenous language is an asset.
