The appointment will begin in Spring 2026. A successful applicant will demonstrate excellence in teaching undergraduate biology courses, including lecture and laboratory components, a commitment to student-centered teaching and the use of evidence-based instructional practices in the STEM fields, experience with undergraduate mentorship, and evidence of service at their institutions.

Biology is the largest program in the Department of Natural Sciences with over 800 majors and offers three undergraduate degrees: a BS, BA, or a BS with teacher certification in Biology. Within our BS degree program there are multiple tracks; cellular and molecular biology, zoology, ecology, and pre-health professions. As an instructional faculty member of the Biology team at a rapidly growing, aspirational university, faculty are expected to actively engage in curriculum development and improvement, student success initiatives, and recruitment activities. Teaching responsibilities will include lecture and laboratory instruction in microbiology, microbial pathogenesis, bacteriology, and molecular biology as well as entry-level biology courses. Enhancing student success in these foundational courses is a high priority for the university. The current teaching load for instructional faculty with service obligations is 4/4. Faculty are expected to contribute service to the department, college, university, community, and profession.

The Department of Natural Sciences aims to provide the best possible educational experiences in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, and Water Resources Sciences & Technology (WATER). Our undergraduate degree programs prepare students for entry into the workplace or graduate programs. We value hands-on, interdisciplinary experiences to provide a broad perspective in the natural sciences.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach the equivalent of 24 course credits per academic year (4/4 teaching load) in Biology courses, including Microbiology, Microbial pathogenesis, Bacteriology, Molecular Biology, and General Biology.
  • As part of the largest program in the Natural Science Dept, service related to developing and assessing an engaging curriculum to reach all students is a top priority.
  • Service at the department, college, university, community, and professional levels is also expected.

Required Education and Experience:

  • A Ph.D. in Biology with a specialization in microbiology from an accredited university at time of appointment.
  • Experience teaching lecture courses in the field of microbiology at the college level.
  • Experience teaching introductory/foundational biology courses at the college level.
  • Evidence of developing and implementing innovative pedagogical approaches to teaching in the STEM fields.
  • Excellent skills in interaction and communication with students, faculty, and staff.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Prior experience mentoring or advising students, particularly in STEM fields.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, D2L) and instructional technology.
  • Experience in course or curriculum development.
  • Commitment to departmental service and student engagement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to complete tasks and work cooperatively with others.
  • Strong self-discipline and ability to work independently.
