The Senior Backend Software Engineer will play a key role in shaping our data storage architecture and developing the next generation of our industry-leading software for actuaries and advanced analysts at major global insurance companies.

Built on Microsoft Azure and AWS, our solutions power statistical modeling, data management, and complex reporting used worldwide. We seek someone with strong experience in database design, architecture, and software development, passionate about exploring emerging data storage technologies to drive innovation and performance.

You will utilize the latest tools and technologies to collaborate with other developers in architecting, developing, and maintaining cloud-based data storage solutions to analyze and solve complex business problems in the insurance industry.

Key responsibilities include:

• Understanding complex software requirements; our solutions are statistically complex and visually interactive, requiring innovative presentation methods for our sophisticated users such as statisticians, actuaries, and senior financial analysts.
• Investigating latest database tools and techniques, recommending and defining optimal usage to build industry-leading solutions.
• Leading database discussions and defending architectural decisions within the development team.
• Monitoring database performance and troubleshooting issues.
• Maintaining and optimizing existing databases.
• Developing work products independently.

Travel is rarely required but may be necessary infrequently.

We seek a team player with strong interpersonal skills, a collaborative mindset, and solid experience designing and building enterprise applications, especially in Microsoft Azure and Windows environments.

Attributes include:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science or software engineering
• 7+ years of software development experience with a focus on business applications
• Proficiency in Microsoft Azure and Windows environments
• Strong communication skills and fluent English

• Expertise in SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, Data Explorer, MySQL, DynamoDB, MongoDB)
• Proficiency in complex SQL queries, stored procedures, triggers, functions
• Experience with PL/pgSQL, T-SQL, or similar
• Knowledge of ETL, data transformation, indexing, partitioning, and query optimization
• Experience with data lakes and warehouses like Databricks, BigQuery, Snowflake

• Hands-on experience with Azure and AWS functionalities (Functions, App Services, Key Vault, Storage, Messaging, PAAS, SAAS)
• Proficiency with Microsoft development stack: Python, C#, .NET, JavaScript, Visual Studio
• Object-Oriented programming, RESTful APIs, microservices, CI/CD with Azure DevOps
• Experience with ORMs like Entity Framework

• Knowledge of IAM, access control, database security best practices
• Experience with data encryption (KMS, TLS, at rest & transit)
• Awareness of GDPR, HIPAA, PCI-DSS standards

• Query tuning, execution plans, indexing strategies
• Caching mechanisms (Redis, Memcached)
• Database connection pooling, horizontal scaling

• Database version control, schema migration tools
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (AWS CodePipeline, GitHub Actions, Jenkins)
• Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS CDK)
