Microgrid System Developer - Energy Management & Control
Job summary
A leading technology firm in Montreal is looking for a Microgrid System Developer. You'll design and implement EMS software for substation control, develop embedded software for controllers, and work on critical integrations. Candidates should have a degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science and 3+ years of relevant experience, particularly in microgrid systems. Proficiency with application development and firmware for microcontrollers is essential.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in microgrid or distributed energy system development.
- Experience with controllers/PLCs is an asset.
- Proficiency with RTOS, C/C++, Linux, FPGA/SoC platforms.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain EMS software modules.

About the team:
The Smart Grid Technology Lab’s research focuses on Power electronics, Energy Management Systems and other Smart Grid Technologies, applying the latest technology to the digital power industry. The lab has become a research organization with many significant industry achievements.
- Design, implement, and maintain EMS software modules for substation control and monitoring.
- Develop embedded software/firmware for substation controllers (RTUs, IEDs, gateways).
- Work with protocol stacks (IEC 60870-5-101/104, IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus) for integration into control systems.
- Participate in system architecture design, focusing on scalability, reliability, and performance of EMS platforms.
- Develop control logic, communication drivers, and APIs for EMS / SCADA integration.
About the ideal candidate:
- Hold a bachelor's or a Master's degree in the field of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or with a related background in power system protection and automation.
- 3+ years of working experience in microgrid or distributed energy system development, including system design, simulation, or deployment. Experience with controllers/PLCs will be considered a valuable asset.
- Proficiency with application-level development (RTOS, C/C++, Linux, FPGA/SoC platforms, etc.)
- Proficiency with microcontroller firmware development (Raspberry PI, Arduino, ARM Cortex, etc.), embedded networking protocols & APIs (Modbus/TCP, DNP3/IP, SPI, OpenSSL, etc.).
