Position Summary:

The Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) and the Ottawa Hospital is seeking a full-time academic Cardiologist with a focus on Critical Care Cardiology Research.

The successful candidate will work at UOHI, which is a large tertiary centre providing cardiovascular care to Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is Canada’s largest and foremost heart health centre. It employs over 1,400 physicians, nurses, researchers, technicians, allied health professionals and more. The Institute handles more than 235,000 patient visits yearly from across Canada.

In addition to state-of-the-art catheterization (4) and electrophysiology (4) labs, a dedicated cardiac imaging facility with PET, MRI, CT, SPECT and echocardiography imaging, core facilities include 96 inpatient ward beds, an intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) with 14 beds, an intensive cardiac surgery unit (CSICU) with 27 beds, a Day Unit with 36 beds, a Reference Centre with 11 beds and a Structural Procedure Unit of 6 beds.

The Division is renowned for delivery of outstanding cardiac care, excellence in education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels (recognized as a leading training program in Canada and internationally). The UOHI is recognized internationally for its research, in particular in critical care cardiology, STEMI/ACS, valvular heart disease, electrophysiology, cardiac imaging, cardiac transplantation and pulmonary hypertension among others as well as a rapidly expanding program in structural interventions.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will join a group of 50 cardiologists working at UOHI. The Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU) at UOHI is a high-volume, high-acuity 14 bed unit that provides care to critically ill cardiac patients, including invasive mechanical ventilation, CRRT and percutaneous mechanical circulatory support devices. A wide breadth of cardiac pathology is seen in the unit, including patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock, decompensated valvular heart disease, and electrical storm.

A wide breadth of cardiac pathology is seen in the unit, including patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock, decompensated valvular heart disease, and electrical storm.

The successful candidate will predominantly work in the ICCU and will participate in the ICCU on-call rotation on a regular basis. The individual will also provide care in our Reference Center (a step-down unit) located geographically just outside the level 3 unit, comprising 17 beds. Additional clinical work includes, but is not limited to, the Rapid Assessment of Critical Events (RACE) team and Virtual Cardiac Critical Care program. Additional clinical responsibilities will depend on the successful applicant’s subspecialty training and academic track.

The candidate will participate in academic activities, including teaching of medical residents (both informally at the bedside and with formalized teaching sessions, including morning report and academic half-day).

Finally, the ICCU supports a highly successful, internationally recognized research program. The ICCU research team is leading multiple investigator-initiated clinical trials focused on the care of critically ill cardiac patients. Participation in current clinical research is encouraged and support for new projects will be provided by the Division and the ICCU team.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must hold FRCPC certification in Internal Medicine, with subspecialty certification in Cardiology (or equivalent specialty certification). The candidate must also have completed training in Critical Care Medicine and/or Cardiac Critical Care at a recognized training center.

Candidates must have a very strong clinical research track record. The practice profile will be negotiated based on expected academic and clinical deliverables. Evidence of significant academic productivity is an advantage. Academic appointment ranking will be based on qualifications and experience; however, we are targeting applications from those who qualify for Associate Professor or above. Preference will be given to candidates with formal board certification in a 2-year Critical Care Medicine fellowship program.

Applications from non-Canadians will be considered. The licensing path for U.S. trained physicians has recently been simplified, and full details are available here: CPSO - Practising in Ontario: Information for U.S.-Trained Physicians. The licensing pathway for may internationally trained physicians has also been simplified and usually requites no additional exams.

Why choose Ontario?

  • Streamlined licensing pathways - U.S. physicians certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties are eligible for licensure without additional certifications or examinations.
  • Lowest membership fees - Ontario has the lowest regulatory membership fee among all Canadian provinces.
  • Efficient & timely registration - CPSO is committed to quick and transparent processing, ensuring a smooth transition for physicians looking to practice in Ontario.

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario; be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa within the Department of Medicine; and have experience teaching medical students and residents.

Additional Information:

There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually.

The Ottawa Heart Institute Research Corporation (OHIRC) is UOHI’s research arm. It can be thought of as a shared services corporation wherein scientists/investigators conduct research through grant funding, contracts, etc., and are supported by core services of the Institute. These supports include but are not limited to: posting and communicating useful information about research, support during the pre and post award processes, management of the internal grant review program, manuscript due diligence process, other reviews and funding competitions, and PIs support programs such as mentorship.

The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 28 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.

The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada’s top-tier medical faculties. The Faculty ranks 3rd in Canada for research intensity in Medicine/Science (Maclean’s) and 4th in Canada for citations (2022 THE rankings). remarkable achievements are a strong testament to the competitiveness and excellence of our Faculty.

The City of Ottawa provides a thriving multicultural and bilingual environment. Ottawa boasts numerous cultural activities as well as readily accessible sporting and natural resources, making it an ideal family and healthy living environment.

The Department of Medicine is committed to ensuring equity, diversity and inclusion in our work environment. We strongly encourage applications from Indigenous persons, visible minorities members (racialized persons), persons with disabilities, women, as well as from all qualified candidates with the skills and knowledge to productively engage with equitable, diverse and inclusive communities.
