Job summary

SMS Equipment is seeking an experienced Welding Estimator to support welding and fabrication projects at our Fort McMurray branch. You will create detailed work scopes, estimate project costs, develop quotes, and prepare work packages for shop execution.

Working with customers, suppliers, the Inspection Team, and shop personnel, you will help ensure projects are planned accurately, completed on time and within budget, and meet quality standards. Salary is CAD 140,000–150,000 with on-site work.

Qualifications

• Welding Journeyperson with 5+ years of experience.
• Strong estimating and planning abilities.
• Ability to interpret technical drawings.

Responsibilities

• Create detailed work scopes for welding and fabrication projects; analyze specs and drawings.
• Estimate parts, materials, labour, equipment, and supplier needs.
• Develop comprehensive quotes; obtain supplier pricing and review for feasibility.
• Assist with shop schedules to meet delivery dates and revenue targets.
• Create work packages with instructions and materials lists for shop floor.
• Secure purchase orders and manage revisions.
• Coordinate parts ordering and tracking, including customer-supplied items.
• Maintain estimate and project cost records; monitor progress and adjust as needed.
• Develop historical estimating data and suggest cost-saving ideas.

Description

SMS Equipment is seeking an experienced Welding Estimator to support the successful estimation and execution of welding and fabrication projects at our Fort McMurray branch. In this role, you will create detailed work scopes, estimate project costs, develop competitive quotes, and prepare work packages for shop execution.

Working closely with customers, suppliers, the Inspection Team, Superintendents, Supervisors, Coordinators, and shop floor personnel, you will help ensure projects are planned accurately, completed on time and within budget, and meet required quality standards.

Work Location: Fort McMurray, AB
Salary: $140,000 - $150,000, based on experience
Work Arrangement: On-site
Schedule: Monday - Friday

What You'll Do

• Create detailed work scopes for welding and fabrication projects and analyze specifications, blueprints, and supporting documentation.
• Estimate the parts, materials, labour, equipment, and supplier requirements needed for each project.
• Develop comprehensive and competitive quotes, obtain supplier pricing, and review estimates with the project team for accuracy and feasibility.
• Assist with shop schedules to support customer delivery dates and forecasted revenue targets.
• Create work packages for the shop floor, including detailed instructions and materials lists.
• Secure purchase orders, request work orders, and manage required revisions.
• Coordinate parts ordering, track back-ordered and customer-supplied items, and support receiving and returns.
• Maintain accurate estimate and project cost records, monitor project progress, and adjust estimates or schedules as required.
• Develop historical estimating data, contribute cost-saving and process-improvement ideas, and communicate schedule compliance and project updates.

What You Bring

You are Welding Journeyperson with 5+ years of relevant experience and strong estimating, planning, mathematical, and analytical capabilities. You can interpret technical drawings, develop accurate scopes and quotes, organize multiple priorities, and communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and operational teams.

• Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, using relevant software and technologies, and applying knowledge of C.W.B., W.C.B., and OH&S acts and regulations.

Nice to Haves:

• Experience overseeing or coordinating large field and shop operations; supervisory experience.
• Experience using a 3D scanner and drafting software.
• Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority, work independently and collaboratively, and maintain strong organization and attention to detail.
