Purpose:

Education:

College Diploma in a related trade or an equivalent of 2 years recent experience (defined as within the last three years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks. This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below. Certified tool and die maker preferred.

Experience:

Four (4) years current and related experience in mechanical/electro-mechanical design and fabrication. Experience designing, constructing, modifying, repairing, testing, and installing various complex apparatus. Experience in fabrication and training/ demonstrations and presentation is required. Experience with instructing others in a shop environment. Experience with monitoring inventory.

Skills:

Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse group of individuals is a must for the design and construction of apparatus.
Theoretical and practical knowledge of a wide range of mechanical/electro-mechanical elements and machinery including sheet-metal work and carpentry work as well as welding skills to an advanced level on stainless steel, mild steel and aluminum.
Skilled and/or expert in repairing, maintaining, operating and operational problem solving of a variety of machine-shop equipment.
Ability to exercise considerable judgment concerning the specification of materials and fabrication procedures suitable to a workshop and the need to establish workshop schedules to maximize workshop efficiency.
Efficient verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to handle multiple and competing priorities.
Demonstrated ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
Demonstrated ability to problem solve and show initiative.
Equipment proficiency: Lathe. Milling Machine. Drill Press. Band and table saw. Grinders. Belt sanders. ShearBending brake. Presses. Welding equipment. Soldering. Measuring equipment. Hand tools. CNC. 3D printers.

This position requires the candidate to produce a verification of degree(s), credentials(s), or equivalencies from accredited institutions and/or international equivalents at the time of interview. Hours of work: This is a multi-incumbent permanent full-time role with work schedules defined as follows.Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. Tuesday to Friday, 2:00pm to 10:00pm* & Saturday 8:30am to 4:30pm*

• Note: hours may change to Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm to support Machine Shop labs and/or staff absenteeism. Additionally, rare, occasional Sunday 8:30am to 4:30pm work may be requested. Occasional overtime will be available. Vacation restriction: During peak periods to ensure continuous support to undergraduate course activities.
