Job description

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery, built in 1894 in the historic village of Steveston, is a living monument to the people involved in BC’s fishing industry. The National Historic Site is operated by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, a non-profit society. Collaborating with Parks Canada, the Society preserves Canada’s West Coast fishing history and presents it in an engaging and relevant way.

The Summer Education Outreach Coordinator will report primarily to the Curatorial Program Manager and collaborate with the Visitor Experience Manager and Marketing and Communications Coordinator. This role will play a significant part in raising awareness of the Cannery’s year-round activities and communicating the Cannery’s mission to the wider community.

Responsibilities:
  1. Facilitate on- and off-site outreach promoting the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society’s programs, events, exhibits, and mission.
  2. Act as a public ambassador of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery to raise awareness of the site and its mission.
  3. Provide general information to visitors about the Cannery, surrounding village, and other nearby heritage attractions.
  4. Interact with a wide range of diverse audiences to communicate the relevance of the Cannery and Cannery programming.
  5. Research current and future outreach opportunities at which the Cannery’s participation might be relevant.
  6. Support the Audience Engagement team to create an educational outreach program plan.
  7. Participate in staff meetings and group training opportunities when offered.
  8. Work with other staff to deliver special events at the site.
  9. Other duties as required and directed by the Curatorial Program Manager.

Skills and Experience:

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with audiences. Previous experience in front-line customer service is an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required, fluency in French or other languages is a strong asset.
  • Can demonstrate confident and engaging public speaking skills.
  • Experience in delivering exceptional customer service in a museum or heritage setting is preferred.
  • Valid B.C. driver’s license or other reliable transportation required. Outreach work may include offsite opportunities around the Lower Mainland.

Remuneration:
