Job summary

YMCA Calgary is seeking a Sport Supervisor to lead and deliver multi-sport programs, including basketball, badminton, soccer, and Learn to Skate at the Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge. You will coach, mentor staff and volunteers, recruit volunteers, and manage program budgets to ensure high-quality program execution.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or related field, 2+ years coaching with 1 year supervisory experience, and fitness certifications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology or related field.
  • Experience with the Canadian Sport for Life Model including Physical Literacy.
  • Minimum two years coaching and sport program delivery; one year supervisory experience.
  • Learn to Skate programming experience is an asset.
  • National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Fundamentals is an asset (basketball, soccer, badminton or skating).
  • Current First Aid with CPR-C within 12 months from an approved provider; asset if issued by Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St. John’s Ambulance or Canadian Ski Patrol.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver programs with high quality and program design execution.
  • Build relationships with parents, participants, volunteers and staff.
  • Maintain organizational and administrative procedures per YMCA Calgary.
  • Recruit volunteers (fairs, interviews, training and performance management).
  • Market and promote programs; manage ILT and branch budgets; purchase equipment as needed.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to staff and volunteers; offer regular feedback.
  • Ensure staff and volunteers receive department and Association training.
  • Communicate effectively in various settings; strong written and oral skills; use of technology.
  • Ensure excellent member service by addressing participant needs promptly.
  • Facilitate leadership programs for staff and volunteers; attend ILT and committee work.
  • Assist with branch duties, events, registrations, etc.
  • Support health and safety systems and policies.
  • Be a Let’s Raise Ambassador and share YMCA stories.

What qualifications are we looking for?
  • Bachelor of Physical Education, Kinesiology (or related degree) and/or equivalent experience
  • Experience working with the Canadian Sport for Life Model including Physical Literacy
  • Minimum two years’ experience in coaching and sport program delivery, and one‑year supervisory experience
  • Experience with Learn to Skate programming would be considered an asset
  • National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Fundamentals is an asset (basketball, soccer, badminton or skating)
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR‑C certificated within the last 12 months from an approved AB OHS provider. Asset if certification is issued by one of the following five Canadian organizations: Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St. John’s Ambulance and/or Canadian Ski Patrol.
  • Evidence of a cleared police security clearance including a vulnerable sector search
  • Three professional references required

  • Ensure high quality of programs and execution of the program design by personal, direct delivery of programs (Basketball, multi‑sport, Badminton, Soccer & Learn to Skate)
  • Build relationships with parents, participants, volunteers and staff
  • Have a high degree of organizational and administrative skill to ensure Association procedures are adhered to as set by YMCA Calgary
  • Volunteer recruitment (volunteer fairs, interview, train and performance manage)
  • Market and promote programs
  • Develop, control and evaluate the Sport Integrated Leadership Team (ILT) budget, the Sport Work Group budget for your branch, related statistics, and purchase equipment as required
  • Active coaching and mentoring of staff and volunteers, including providing feedback on a regular basis
  • Be responsible for ensuring your staff and volunteers receive department and Association specific training
  • Effectively communicate in a variety of settings; excellent oral and written communication skills, including intermediate use of technology
  • Ensure excellent quality member service by identifying the needs and wants of participants as priority and respond to their concerns in an effective and timely manner
  • Facilitate leadership programs for staff and volunteers
  • Attend all ILT meetings, Work Group meetings and provide leadership of designated committee work
  • Assist with branch duties (including scheduled duty manager shifts, day camps, registration days, etc)
  • Attend branch and ILT special events, Work Group special events (Healthy Kids Day, Basketball tournaments, All Sport One Day, in‑services, Stampede Breakfast, volunteer appreciation, etc)
  • Implement all health and safety systems, policies, and procedures
  • Be a Let’s Raise Ambassador and share YMCA stories
