Job Description

Supervisor, Material Handling

The Supervisor, Material Handling position is responsible for supervising and coordinating the activities of workers engaged in the movement or storage of products using equipment such as forklifts and conveyors. This role involves scheduling material handling activities by reviewing requests and shipping or receiving tickets. The supervisor may also make decisions on personnel actions (e.g., hiring, termination, promotion).

Performance Expectations

• Schedule workload for the shipping and receiving department.
• Collaborate with Material Control and Purchasing to plan daily shipments.
• Arrange transportation for shipping materials.
• Communicate clear and precise instructions.
• Coordinate and oversee departmental activities.
• Prepare shipments, including packaging, carrier arrangements, inspection clearance, customs, and shipping documents.
• Contract transportation services regularly, considering truck properties.
• Maintain material control with tow motor drivers.
• Assign daily tasks to the department.
• Report and record any damage to incoming materials.
• Maintain all Lot Control and Shipping & Receiving documentation.
• Conduct regular dock audits.
• Plan work processes and schedules to optimize equipment and workforce utilization.
• Review and approve estimates and invoices for materials.
• Calculate extensions, discounts for volume purchases, and taxes.
• Select suppliers for fabrication materials, tools, and shop supplies, considering pricing and quality.
• Coordinate work processes among material handlers, machinists, and others to ensure timely completion of customer orders.

Credentials

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• At least three years of experience in a shipping and/or receiving department.
• Minimum two years of relevant experience.
• Knowledge of NAFTA regulations.
• Proficiency with basic computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Ability to operate computer-controlled machinery and print delivery slips.
• Ability to read safety handling procedures, hazard warnings, and identify hazard symbols on Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System labels for proper material handling.

• Ability to discuss daily operations and technical matters with co-workers, engineers, manufacturers, and other specialists.
