The Role

We are looking for a Senior Instrumentation Technologist to support the Montreal Road Wind Tunnel Facilities group of the Aerospace Research Centre. The Senior Instrumentation Technologist would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

As a Senior Instrumentation Technologist, you will work as part of the Montreal Road Facility Support Group of the Aerodynamic Laboratory providing lead technical support in wind tunnel instrumentation maintenance and development for the four facilities on campus. Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Plan, execute and supervise (occasionally) preventive and corrective maintenance of industrial instrumentation including electronic transmitters, control valves, switches, sensors, etc;
• Execute and supervise (occasionally) the calibration of critical and noncritical instruments following existing procedures and quality system work instructions based on the NRC Aerospace Quality Management System (QMS), as well as continuous improvement of the procedures;
• Ensure the data quality provided by the instruments by data analysis to comply with the QMS;
• Develop software and hardware applications to perform calibration routines for instruments;
• Assist in the design, development and assembly of electronic and real-time computer hardware / software used for control and measurement in the wind tunnel facilities of the laboratory;
• Provide technical expertise for defining requirements and selecting scientific instrumentation, components, software, and equipment;
• Maintain health monitoring equipment for wind tunnel systems and derive predictive maintenance trends;
• Troubleshooting of facility systems during downtime;
• Generation of work procedures, guidelines and hazard assessments;
• Training and mentoring junior technologists as well as liaising with Project Engineers and Facility Engineers for the purpose of maintaining the facilities.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

Post-secondary education in Engineering or in Instrumentation or Electrical Technology or in a related field.

Experience

• Significant* and recent** experience in experimental measurement techniques and signal conditioning/processing;
• Significant and recent experience in the design, specification, and development of instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems hardware and software;
• Significant experience in the maintenance, calibration, operation, troubleshooting and repair of electronic measurement instrumentation while working under pressure to provide rapid and robust solutions;
• Significant experience using laboratory programming languages (LabVIEW, MATLAB or similar) to develop custom software and integration of hardware and data acquisition systems;
• Significant experience using software tools to analyze, interpret and draw conclusions from large amounts of test data;
• Significant experience using programming languages/environments such as LabView, C, C++, Matlab, etc. (or similar software) to develop custom control and data acquisition systems; and
• Experience planning and implementing technical projects including delegating tasks and the development of cost estimates, status updates and schedules.
• Significant experience is defined as at least 2 years
• Recent experience is defined as within the last 5 years

• Advanced knowledge in specifying, installing and calibrating instrumentation, sensors and data acquisition hardware for temperature, pressure, flow and vibration measurements, including the required calibration standards for such measurements;
• Basic skills in using various hand tools for instrumentation panel building;
• Advanced knowledge of software design principles and the use of software such as Excel, LabView and Matlab;
• Significant knowledge of safety best practices and methods used in industrial facilities;
• Advanced knowledge of experimental measurement techniques, feedback control systems and signal conditioning / processing;
• Advanced knowledge of the design, troubleshooting and repair of electronic and electromechanical systems; and
• Advanced knowledge of calibration methods and standards as well as the analysis of measurement accuracy.

Compensation

From $83,435 to $107,838 per annum.
