The Role

We are looking for a Senior Instrumentation Technologist to support the Central Facility team of the Propulsion and Power Laboratory (PROPEL) of the Aerospace Research Centre. The selected candidate would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The Senior Instrumentation Technologist is a highly autonomous and organized individual who excels in technical tasks, demonstrating solid problem-solving skills while effectively prioritizing tasks and optimizing processes in the field of instrumentation and controls, working closely and in coordination with other technical officers, engineers and researchers. The ideal candidate must possess extensive hands-on technical expertise in programmable logic controllers (PLCs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and industrial communications protocols (e.g., ControlNet, DeviceNet, Modbus, EthernetIP, etc.) to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and ensure reliability of a cutting-edge industrial environment with minimal supervision. Familiarity with LabVIEW and data acquisition systems is a plus.

You will be specifically responsible for installing, configuring, repairing, maintaining, and troubleshooting instrumentation and control systems for the compression, treatment, and distribution of air, fuels, and cooling media (water) for testing aircraft engines and aerospace components. Your tasks will be done in a team-centric approach with the Central Facility Instrumentation Team and its Operations Group.

You will also be expected to use your extensive technical expertise to perform complex technical work with complete autonomy, occasionally support the facility operations team in operational activities as well as prepare technical reports, progress reports, and technical drawings. Additionally, you will be responsible for calibrating critical and non-critical instruments in accordance with existing procedures and quality system work instructions based on the NRC Aerospace ISO-9001. Some administrative work for procurement and supplier management is to be expected.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

Diploma from a three-year post-secondary Engineering Technology program or an Applied Science Technology program in electrical engineering, electronics or in instrumentation. A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Automation or Process Control Engineering combined with relevant experience will also be considered. A combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Extensive team leadership experience coordinating the safe and effective execution, troubleshooting, and maintenance activities of instrumentation and control systems under a very dynamic schedule and tight deadlines;
Extensive experience, with a high level of autonomy in the application of technical principles, technologies and best practices in instrumentation, advanced control and data acquisition, including calibration, design, specifications, assembly, modification, programming, configuring and maintaining specialized systems and equipment;
Extensive experience in hardware installation, implementation, configuration and troubleshooting of control systems, such as Allen-Bradley ControlLogix Programmable Logic Controllers, Allen-Bradley FactoryTalk, Aveva InTouch HMI, WW Historian;
Extensive experience with industrial communications protocols such as ControlNet, DeviceNet, Modbus, EthernetIP, RS-232, RS-485;
Significant experience in planning and implementing technical projects including optimizing and prioritizing workload and the development of cost estimates, status updates and schedules;
Significant experience mentoring junior technical staff; supervising contractors and service providers;
Significant experience creating and maintaining technical documentation, including drawings (CAD), manuals and standard operating procedures.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Advanced knowledge in ControlLogix Programmable Logic Controllers, PID (Proportional Integral and Derivative) and Feedforward controls and operating principles and protections of turbomachinery with the ability to effectively perform troubleshooting;
Advanced knowledge of operation, calibration, and maintenance of industrial equipment including, but not limited to pumps, intercoolers, instrumentation, sensors, transmitters, signal conditioners, transducers, for the measurement and recording of process variables including, but not limited to temperature, pressure, flow, vibration, strain; including the required calibration standards and procedures for such measurements;
Solid knowledge in air/gas compression and treatment processes at industrial scale and the ability to analyze them to identify operational and equipment performance issues, maintenance requirements and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and reliability;
Solid ability to make up drawings for basic electrical and control systems by-hand, or using computational tools such as CAD, with advanced knowledge of panel building and wiring methods;
Basic knowledge of project management principles, processes and use of office programs for word processing, calculation spreadsheets, project planning and slideshow presentations; and
Solid knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety regulations and legislation required to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment, as well as safety techniques and methods used in industrial facilities.

Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.

A flexible schedule and overtime may be required.
Willingness to work in evening shifts in a rotational schedule supporting facility operations about 10 weeks/year.
Some travelling is required.
The candidate must be willing to work in an industrial environment with elevated levels of noise, high temperatures, high pressures, work at heights, access confined spaces under the required standards, regulation and training for safety.
