Job summary

BC Hydro in Burnaby is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer - Distribution Standards to develop and maintain standards for structures and products across the distribution system. The role requires strong technical judgment and collaboration with engineering, field crews, and vendors.

You will lead design, calculations, field trials, and compliance with CSA and BC Building Code, with 2-3 in-office days weekly in a hybrid setup, and a comprehensive benefits package including a lifetime pension.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from a recognized university.
  • P.Eng. with EGBC in good standing or eligibility for immediate registration.
  • 8+ years of relevant engineering experience for Senior Engineer roles.
  • Experience in design/construction of structures in concrete/steel/aluminum/wood/composites.
  • Working knowledge of CSA codes and BC Building Code.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain standards for structures and products for BC Hydro's distribution system.
  • Standardize new civil products across concept to implementation phases.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and reports.
  • Plan field trials and collaborate with field crews and vendors.
  • Review standards for accuracy and integrity.

  • The candidate will develop and maintain standards by establishing, revising, and updating construction, design, and maintenance standards for structures and products related to BC Hydro's Distribution System, including utility vaults, pads, and duct banks.
  • The candidate will be responsible for developing and standardizing new structures and civil products and specifications across concept, planning, design, construction, and implementation phases.
  • The candidate will be responsible for preparing and reviewing engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and reports.
  • The candidate will be responsible for planning and conducting field trials and collaborating with field crews and vendors to approve products for system-wide use.
  • The candidate will be responsible for reviewing standards and specifications to ensure accuracy and integrity.
  • The candidate will conduct field investigations, surveys, and assessments of structures and provide technical expertise as a subject matter resource to Distribution Engineering, Distribution Design, Asset Planning, and Operations teams, offering guidance on standards interpretation, equipment application, and complex technical issues.
  • The candidate will investigate and resolve engineering challenges by analyzing and resolving complex and unique engineering problems, including failure investigations and safety-related assessments.
  • The candidate will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to build consensus, encourage innovation, and develop engineering solutions that prioritize safety, environmental protection, cost-effectiveness, and the needs of employees and the public.
  • The candidate will be responsible for staying informed of industry trends, advancements, and best practices in engineering.
  • The candidate will support modernization initiatives by contributing to the advancement of standards development processes, including adoption of modern engineering design tools, materials, and AI-assisted workflows.
  • The candidate will build professional relationships by cultivating strong relationships with colleagues, clients, and cross-functional teams to set priorities, evaluate work impacts, and address concerns.
  • The candidate will work with independence by operating within broad objectives and budget guidelines, exercising sound engineering judgment, and consulting the manager on critical or high-impact projects.
  • The candidate will be responsible for mentoring and training junior staff members to develop their technical skills and expertise.
Job Requirements
  • The candidate must possess a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from a recognized or accredited university.
  • The candidate must be fully registered with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing or meet eligibility requirements for immediate registration; EIT and internationally trained engineers actively pursuing EGBC registration may be considered for lower positions.
  • The candidate must have relevant engineering experience, typically 8+ years for Senior Engineer roles, with candidates having lesser experience considered for junior roles including engineers in training.
  • The candidate must have a proven track record of engineering experience in projects of varying scope and complexity related to design, fabrication, and construction of structures in concrete, steel, aluminum, wood, and composite materials, as well as inspection of structures, condition assessment, load rating of existing structures, and repair design.
  • The candidate must demonstrate proficiency in engineering software and tools.
  • The candidate must have strong verbal and written communication skills, allowing clear explanation of technical options, presentation of solutions to diverse audiences, and adaptation of communication to different levels of understanding.
  • The candidate must exhibit proven leadership, teamwork, relationship management, and interpersonal abilities.
  • The candidate must demonstrate excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • The candidate must apply practical knowledge and sound judgment to effectively analyze and resolve issues.
  • The candidate must have experience in design and construction of utility structures, pipelines, and transportation infrastructure, and preparation of construction specifications.
  • The candidate must have working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including CSA A23.1, A23.3, A23.4, S16, BC Building Code, etc.
