BC Hydro is seeking experienced Distribution Engineers for permanent, full-time roles at Edmonds A01. You will deliver and assure engineering outcomes for regional distribution systems and major projects up to 35 kV, while mentoring junior staff.

The position requires a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, eligibility for P.Eng licensure, and strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities. Travel may be involved; competitive benefits apply.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university; other engineering disciplines may be considered based on experience.
• Eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC or equivalent.
• 8+ years senior or 4+ years intermediate experience; Juniors/EIT considered.
• Strong knowledge of overhead/underground distribution up to 35 kV.
• Proven leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills; sound engineering judgement.

Responsibilities

• Provide engineering expertise for regional distribution systems and capital projects.
• Act as Professional of Record or Owner’s Engineer to review consultant designs.
• Lead design strategies, scope validation, risk assessment for complex projects.
• Perform load flow, voltage stability, fault current, and protection coordination studies.
• Support procurement, construction, and commissioning with technical reviews.
• Collaborate with Project Managers, Planning, Operations, and stakeholders.

• The candidate must provide professional engineering expertise for capital system improvements and major distribution projects serving residential, commercial, and industrial loads.
• The candidate will deliver and assure engineering outcomes by taking direct accountability as Professional of Record or by fulfilling the Owner’s Engineer role, reviewing and accepting consultant designs to ensure compliance with BC Hydro standards, safety requirements, and accepted engineering practice.
• The candidate will establish design strategies, validate scope, and identify technical risks and mitigation approaches for complex projects.
• The candidate will perform detailed engineering studies including load flow, voltage stability, fault current, feeder cable pulling analysis, feeder ampacity studies, overhead pole line design, power quality, and protection coordination.
• The candidate will support procurement, construction, and commissioning activities through technical reviews, field support, and issue resolution.
• The candidate will collaborate closely with Project Managers, Construction, Planning, Operations, and external stakeholders to deliver safe, reliable, constructible, and cost-effective solutions.
• The candidate will provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to project engineers, designers, technologists, and technical support staff.

Distribution Engineering – Regional:

• The candidate will be responsible for supporting regional distribution systems by conducting engineering studies, investigations, and system assessments related to load growth, customer connections, reliability, and safety.
• The candidate will deliver and assure engineering outcomes by acting as Professional of Record or Owner’s Engineer, reviewing and accepting consultant designs to ensure compliance with BC Hydro standards, safety requirements, and accepted engineering practice.
• The candidate will provide engineering expertise for system reinforcement, replacement, and expansion of overhead and underground distribution infrastructure up to and including 35 kV.
• The candidate will perform detailed engineering studies including load flow, voltage stability, fault current, feeder cable pulling analysis, feeder ampacity studies, overhead pole line design, power quality, and protection coordination.
• The candidate will support Distribution Planning by recommending and implementing system improvements as part of customer connections.
• The candidate will support Operations and Asset Planning through technical analysis, field investigations, and engineering judgement.
• The candidate will work closely with regional stakeholders, operations crews, designers, and planners to balance safety, reliability, constructability, environmental impact, and lifecycle cost.
• The candidate will mentor and guide junior engineers and technical staff while supporting continuous improvement of engineering standards and practices.

Job Requirements

• The candidate must have graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized or accredited university, with other engineering disciplines considered based on relevant experience.
• The candidate will be required to hold or be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC), with equivalent international or Canadian registrations considered.
• The candidate must have relevant engineering experience, typically 8+ years for Senior Engineer roles and 4+ years for Intermediate Engineer roles, with candidates having lesser experience considered for Junior roles, including Engineers in Training (EIT).
• The candidate must possess strong technical knowledge of overhead and underground distribution systems operating up to and including 35 kV.
• The candidate must demonstrate the ability to apply sound engineering judgement, analytical thinking, and practical problem-solving skills.
• The candidate must possess strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to a wide range of audiences.
• The candidate must demonstrate proven leadership, teamwork, relationship management, and interpersonal skills.
• The candidate must hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing and be willing to travel as required.
