Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Manage dam-related assets in an assigned region, including dams, spillways, and monitoring.
  • Develop and maintain the capital plan for Dam Safety assets and capital projects.
  • Plan and oversee investigations into dam deficiencies and risk reduction.
  • Support system-wide Dam Safety capital plan and asset plans.
  • Maintain investments in Dam Safety within BC Hydro Ten-Year Capital Plan and manage advisory boards.

  • The candidate will be responsible for managing dam-related assets, including dams, spillways, flood discharge passages, generation water passages, control devices, reservoir shoreline, slope works, and monitoring within an assigned region.
  • The candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining the capital plan for Dam Safety assets within the assigned region, including identifying project needs, defining scope, estimating costs, and consulting with execution teams.
  • The candidate will be responsible for planning and overseeing engineering investigations into actual and potential dam deficiencies within the assigned region.
  • The candidate will be responsible for supporting development and maintenance of a system-wide Dam Safety capital plan and risk reduction strategy.
  • The candidate will be responsible for developing facility and river system strategies and collaborating with Stations Asset Planning to prepare Facility Asset Plans.
  • The candidate will be responsible for maintaining and updating individual investments within the Dam Safety component of BC Hydro’s Ten-Year Capital Plan, initiating capital improvement projects, serving as Planner for selected projects, and organizing and managing project Advisory Boards when required.
  • The candidate will be responsible for supporting the identification and prioritization of preventive, condition-based, and corrective maintenance requirements.
  • The candidate will be responsible for contributing to the planning and oversight of the annual maintenance plan.
  • The candidate will be responsible for initiating and managing Dam Safety Reviews in accordance with the regulatory schedule.
  • The candidate will be responsible for initiating, managing, and updating Dam Operations, Maintenance and Surveillance (OMS) Manuals in accordance with the regulatory schedule.
  • The candidate will be responsible for ensuring all applications for dam modifications are submitted and approvals are received prior to work commencement, and that required engineering assurances are submitted upon In-Service status.
  • The candidate will be responsible for supporting the Principal Engineer, Regulatory, to ensure all required documents and applications in the assigned region are submitted in accordance with regulatory requirements, including inspection reports, annual compliance reports, and instrumentation plans.
  • The candidate will be responsible for maintaining strong internal relationships with BC Hydro business units and departments, including Dam Safety Surveillance, Generation Asset Management, Generating Stations Maintenance Planning, Engineering, Indigenous Relations, Program and Contract Management, and Project Delivery – Dam Safety Projects & Programs.
  • The candidate will be responsible for working closely with Dam Safety Engineers, Dam Safety Technologists, Stations Regional Asset Managers, Stations Investment Planning Engineers, and Stations Field Operations personnel in the same region to develop comprehensive and optimized asset plans.
Job Requirements
  • The candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline relevant to dam safety.
  • The candidate must be registered or eligible for registration as a P.Eng. with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • The candidate must have a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in the design, operation, maintenance, surveillance, and/or asset management of dams, hydroelectric facilities, and/or large civil infrastructure, with broader experience across these areas considered an asset.
  • The candidate must have experience considering risk and uncertainty in business decision-making.
  • The candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The candidate must have effective presentation skills, including the ability to communicate complex engineering and dam safety concepts to diverse audiences.
