Job summary

Qualifications

  • PoR eligibility and EGBC knowledge or equivalent.
  • Familiar with field safety, AHJs, codes, and design standards.
  • Experience with geotechnical software and conventional design practices.

Responsibilities

  • Develop safe engineering solutions and designs for medium complexity BC Hydro projects.
  • Assist management to meet safety, cost, quality, and schedule objectives.
  • Resolve technical design problems with independent studies and analysis.
  • Contribute to development of technical standards and best practices.
  • Provide guidance to other engineers to grow future capability.

Job description

Role: Distribution Senior Civil/Geotechnical

Location: Burnaby, BC

Contract Duration: October 5, 2026 - October 2, 2027

Max INC Rate: $98.11/

Max T4 Rate: $81.08/

General Description

The E4 – Engineer is a professional engineer or geoscientist who applies engineering knowledge to provide engineering, estimating, planning, and quality management services for medium complexity projects and/or operations safely, with quality, within budget, and on time.

Experience and Role Accountabilities
  • A minimum eight (8) years of experience in a relevant engineering field or equivalent.
  • Develop safe engineering solutions by using initiative and judgement to perform tasks including developing designs, analyzing and resolving problems, and interpreting engineering specifications on medium complexity and scope assignments for BC Hydro projects and operations.
  • Assist project or operations management to meet safety, cost, quality, and time objectives by proposing changes in plans and estimated costs, recommending payment for work completed by contractors, preparing progress reports, coordinating work schedules and other similar tasks.
  • Resolve highly technical and unusual design and field engineering problems by conducting independent studies and analysis, exercising independent judgment in selecting and interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs to support successful operations and/or project completion at BC Hydro.
  • Participate in BC Hydro’s engineering practice by conducting independent studies and analysis, contributing to the development of technical standards, exercising judgment in selecting and interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs, and making decisions related to methods and designs as well as providing guidance and advice to other engineering professionals to develop future capability at BC Hydro.
Education and Skills
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with Engineers & Geoscientists BC or with another jurisdiction and eligible for registration as such with Engineers & Geoscientists BC
  • BC Hydro uses a Digital Sign and Seal Technology. You may be required to subscribe to a digital seal technology service offered by Notarius
  • Intermediate English skills for professional environment, written and spoken
  • Familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards
  • Ability to use standard industry design/analysis software
  • Intermediate MS Office skills (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
Must Haves
  • Minimum 8 years of civil/geotechnical engineering experience in Canada.
  • Demonstrated experience in geotechnical assessment, foundation design, and construction support, including working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and engineering practices.
  • Ability to serve as Professional of Record (PoR), including demonstrated understanding of EGBC professional practice requirements, quality management, engineering reviews, and document control.
  • Demonstrated experience with construction staging, temporary works, excavation support systems, constructability reviews, and common construction practices in British Columbia.
  • Demonstrated understanding of field safety requirements, environmental considerations, and permitting processes, including experience working with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
  • Hands-on experience using geotechnical engineering software such as GeoStudio, gINT/OpenGround, and other industry-standard analysis and design tools.
  • Strong english skills for professional environment, written and spoken
  • Intermediate MS Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint) and common office environment software.
Nice to Haves
  • Experience working for a Canadian utility owner is an asset.
  • Experience performing geohazard assessments is considered an asset.
  • Trenchless design knowledge is considered an asset.
  • Experience with geotechnical testing equipment is an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience in design related to Distribution plant including U/G and O/H - may include feasibility studies, preliminary design, detailed design, field work, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in geotechnical assessment, design, and construction activity support of utility structures, including maintenance holes, vaults, duct banks, and other underground infrastructure.
  • Familiar with MMCD, MoTT Utilities Manual, CoV Utilities Design Manual, etc. and design and permitting requirements of Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
  • Experience with seismic and ground improvement design is an asset.
  • The candidate must reside in the Lower Mainland.
  • Flexible work model based on business needs.
  • Must be willing to work from the BC Hydro office for 5 days a week during training and familiarization with the work and team (potentially first 6-7 months).
  • Role may switch to hybrid subject to the needs of the business and approval by management.
  • The position is based out of BC Hydro’s Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided by BC Hydro.
Travel Requirements
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver License - must be willing to travel including by plane and by boat.
  • Must have access to a personal vehicle and smartphone and be able to use it for business use as required.
