Job summary

IBM is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join IBM Software in Vancouver. You will design and build scalable backend services for our data-driven platform, focusing on reliability, performance, and security in a cloud-native environment.

You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams, mentor peers, and help drive architectural decisions across multi-tenant distributed systems, using Python, Go, Java, and modern cloud tooling.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of backend systems design and production support experience.
• Strong knowledge of Python runtime environments and packaging.
• Proficiency in a major language (Python/Go/C/Cpp/Java).
• Experience with public clouds and container orchestration (Docker/Kubernetes).
• Experience with observability and incident response.
• BS/MS/PhD in CS or related field, or equivalent work experience.

Responsibilities

• Own and lead the design and implementation of complex backend services.
• Make architecture decisions balancing reliability, scalability, performance, and operability.
• Drive projects end to end from requirements to production.
• Improve service reliability via SLOs/SLAs and observability.
• Collaborate across teams to define APIs and data models.
• Identify and drive platform and productivity improvements.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews and design reviews.
• Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and high standards.
