Job summary

Bison Transport Inc. is seeking a Safety Counselor to promote a culture of safety by coaching drivers on compliant operating practices and regulatory requirements.

You will conduct driver assessments, investigations, and one-on-one counseling to identify root causes, develop corrective actions, and recommend training opportunities; maintain thorough documentation; assist with accident management; and stay current on safety trends and industry best practices.

Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of experience in transportation safety, compliance, driver training, or related role.
  • Strong interpersonal, coaching, and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of transportation safety regulations, compliance requirements, and industry best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one safety coaching and counseling to drivers, addressing performance concerns, regulatory compliance, and safe driving practices.
  • Conduct driver assessments, performance reviews, log audits, accident investigations, and inspection interviews to identify risks and support continuous improvement.
  • Research and communicate safety regulations, industry best practices, and corrective actions to reduce accidents, violations, and inspection failures.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, reports, and records related to driver performance, incidents, progressive discipline, and recognition programs.
  • Assist with accident management activities, including incident reporting, scene support, vehicle recovery, and applicable testing procedures.
  • Evaluate prospective drivers and provide backup support for safety training and instructional activities.

Job description

The Safety Counselor plays a key role in promoting Bison's culture of safety by coaching, educating, and supporting drivers in safe operating practices and regulatory compliance. Through driver assessments, investigations, and one-on-one counseling, the Safety Counselor identifies the root causes of safety-related incidents and performance concerns, develops effective corrective actions, and recommends appropriate training and development opportunities. This role also supports the organization by researching safety trends, developing preventative measures to reduce accidents, violations, and inspection failures, and providing guidance on safety-related matters to help ensure the highest standards of driver performance and compliance.

Specific Responsibilities include:
  • Provide one-on-one safety coaching and counseling to drivers, addressing performance concerns, regulatory compliance, and safe driving practices.

Our Ideal Candidate will possess:
  • 2-3 years of experience in a transportation safety, compliance, driver training, or related role.
  • Strong interpersonal, coaching, and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of transportation safety regulations, compliance requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Progressive knowledge of the transportation and trucking industry.
  • Excellent analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and transportation-related software applications.
  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business, Transportation, or a related field is considered an asset.
  • Over-the-road driving experience and a valid Class 1/AZ is considered an asset.
Shift:

Monday to Friday, standard business hours.
