Job summary

Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Digital Integration Centre of Excellence (DICE) at Innovation Place in Saskatoon is seeking a Research Associate to join multi-project teams under senior researchers. The position involves collaborating with industry partners to address digital needs in AI/ML, IoT, and related areas.

You will help design experiments, mentor student researchers, and work with SMEs to advance project progress, under the guidance of the research manager.

Qualifications

  • A minimum four-year degree in Computer Science or related discipline.
  • At least 3 years’ coding experience; AI/ML preferred.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Experience with data prep, analysis, AI/ML, SQL/NoSQL.
  • Ability to guide others in coding activities.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Organized and able to work independently with timelines.
  • WHMIS and lab safety trained or willing to obtain.

Responsibilities

  • Undertakes project related activities with the principal investigator.
  • Develops and manages project plans and budgets.
  • Mentors student researchers and techs.
  • Collaborates with SMEs to advance project progress.
  • Creates methods and experiments for the project.
  • Executes experiments following lab procedures.
  • Observes, analyzes data and interprets results.
  • Assists in preparing reports and documentation.

Job Duties

Digital Integration Centre of Excellence ( DICE ) is an NSERC funded Technology Access Centre within Saskatchewan Polytech located at Innovation Place in Saskatoon. Reporting to the Research Manager, the Research Associate will be assigned to multiple projects where they will follow the guidance of Senior Researchers. The position will require working collaboratively with various industry partners/clients to help with their digital needs. DICE focuses on Computer Science related research such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Asset Management, Cybersecurity, Internet of Things, and Time-sensitive Networking and Mesh Communication.

Duties:

1. Undertakes project related activities in concert with the principal investigator;

2. Establishes and implements project plans, budgets, and research with senior research associate and project manager.

3. Recruits, mentors and supervises student research assistants and research technologists as deemed necessary by the project scope.

4. Work closely with the SMEs (Small to Medium Enterprises) in the performance of research activities. This will involve planning and leading meetings with the SME’s primary research contact in addition to meetings with other research personnel to ensure project progress.

5. Determines and develops methods, experiments and / or technologies to be used for the project.

6. Under minimal guidance, executes technical experiments following appropriate laboratory / technical procedures.

7. Makes detailed observations and analyzes data to provide an interpretation of results.

8. Assist in the preparation of project documentation, including proposal development, progress reports, and final detailed technical reports as required.

  • A minimum four-year degree in Computer Science or a related discipline. Preference will be given to graduate degrees in a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ work experience in coding-based projects. Preference will be given to candidates with direct experience in AI and ML.
  • Demonstrated technical foundation of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Demonstrated skills or ability to quickly acquire skills in data preparation, data analysis, AI / ML, SQL / NoSQL, data interpretation, and reporting.
  • Must be able to provide technical assistance to others in a wide range of coding-based activities.
  • Effective problem-solving skills with strict attention to detail.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and communication skills.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently within a team environment under tight timelines.
  • WHMIS and laboratory safety trained or willing to obtain this training.
