Job summary

The Royal in Ontario is seeking a Registered Practical Nurse to work in the Forensic Treatment Unit, providing specialized mental health care for individuals in the criminal justice system or at risk of offending. Units are in Ottawa and Brockville, with a focus on assessment, treatment, and collaboration within an inter-disciplinary team.

Applicants should hold a recognized Diploma in Practical Nursing and be registered with CNO, with current CPR/AED certification and CPI training.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a recognized Diploma Program in Practical Nursing.
• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Knowledge of CNO Standards regarding RPN scope of practice.
• Understanding of MHA and relevant legislation.
• CPR/AED Certification within the last 2 years.
• Completion of Prevention of Violence in the Workplace training (C.P.I.) required.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development.
• Technical skills such as glucometer reading, vital signs, injection skills, physical and mental health assessment, catheterization, medication administration, O2 administration, wound care, suctioning, safe patient handling, bladder scanning, ECT recovery, skin care and feeding.
• Ability to develop therapeutic relations with patients.
• Ability to function as a member of the inter-disciplinary team.
• Basic computer skills required.

About the Role

Forensic Treatment Unit

This program provides specialized mental health care for individuals involved in the criminal justice system or those at risk of offending. Services include assessment and treatment for individuals found Not Criminally Responsible (NCR) or Unfit to Stand Trial, as well as those convicted of an offense. Treatment units are located in Ottawa and Brockville.

Qualifications

• Graduate of recognized Diploma Program in Practical Nursing;
• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Knowledge of CNO Standards regarding RPN scope of practice.
• Understanding of MHA and relevant legislation.
• CPR/AED Certification within the last 2 years.
