Job summary

FortisBC in Castlegar, BC, seeks a Regional Engineer with hydroelectric experience to prioritize capital projects and programs for its generating facilities. You will work with Operations, Asset Management, Engineering and Project Management to identify needs and build defensible budgets and short-term plans that align with long-term asset strategies.

You will provide technical support, maintain capital plans, and monitor execution to ensure safe, efficient delivery within scope and budget,

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 4–7 years in hydroelectric generation, asset planning, or operations.
• P.Eng designation or eligibility for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
• Strong technical knowledge of electrical generation systems and asset management.
• Ability to analyze complex issues and develop defensible budgets and plans.
• Proven project management skills across scopes and schedules.

Responsibilities

• Develop and justify a portfolio of capital projects for FortisBC's generating facilities.
• Identify operational needs, evaluate alternatives, and build defensible budgets and business cases.
• Provide technical support, maintain capital plans, and monitor project execution.
• Collaborate with Operations, Asset Management, Engineering and PM to align strategies.
• Ensure work is delivered safely, on time, and within budget.

Position Overview

As an experienced engineer with a background in hydroelectric generation, asset planning, or operations, you know how to turn technical insights into practical solutions. You excel at balancing risk, cost, operational needs, and stakeholder priorities to support the safe and reliable operation of critical generation assets. With strong analytical and communication skills, you're able to build consensus, influence decisions, and guide initiatives from planning through execution.

In this role, you'll develop, prioritize, and justify a portfolio of capital projects and programs for FortisBC's generating facilities. Working closely with Operations, Asset Management, Engineering, Project Management, and other partners, you'll identify operational needs, evaluate alternatives, and develop defensible budgets, business cases, and short-term plans that align with long-term asset strategies. You'll help ensure investments are prioritized and sequenced based on risk reduction, operational requirements, and business value.

You'll also provide technical support to stakeholders, maintain capital plans, support regulatory and approval processes, and monitor project execution to help ensure work is delivered safely, efficiently, and within approved scope, budget, and schedule.

What it takes:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering and four to seven years of experience in hydroelectric generation, asset planning, operations, design, or a related engineering environment; P.Eng. designation (or eligibility for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC).
• Strong technical knowledge of electrical generation systems, asset management principles, and applicable regulatory requirements, standards, and codes.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze complex technical and business issues, evaluate alternatives, and develop defensible recommendations, plans, budgets, and business cases.
• Proven project management skills, including experience developing scopes, cost estimates, schedules, capital plans, and coordinating multiple priorities to achieve business objectives.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams, influence stakeholders, and support decision-making in a complex operating environment.
