Job summary

FortisBC in Trail, BC is seeking a Bachelor of Engineering student (Electrical or Mechanical) in a co-op program for an eight‑month assignment with the Stations Engineering group. The role offers practical exposure to substation capital projects and collaboration with engineers, designers and construction managers.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical or Mechanical, preferably in years 3 or 4.
  • Enrolled in a Co-op program.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Interest in learning about the Electrical Utility Industry.
  • Experience or courses in electrical power systems is an asset.
  • Experience or knowledge with AutoCAD and competence in Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Competent public speaking and strong communicator.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Capital Project support to the Stations Engineering group for substation construction projects of varying scope and size.
  • Perform basic electrical power calculations; assist with substation equipment selection and sizing; reference station design standards.
  • Participate in electrical drawing wire checks to ensure the wiring diagrams match the electrical schematics.
  • Work with project engineers, designers and construction managers to execute the full scope of work for station projects.
  • Work with multidisciplinary engineering and construction teams, including civil engineers and contractors.
  • Perform site visits related to project and standards work to better understand the Transmission and Distribution system.
  • Be involved in the design and development of various substation standards and equipment specifications.
  • Research technical information on new utility products and practices.
  • Network with other utilities; collaborating and sharing information.

Position Overview

This assignment will provide opportunities for engagement with designers, engineers, managers and others in different departments within the organization, and provide an understanding of some of the workings within the operating and engineering groups at FortisBC.

Some station capital projects that the successful candidate may be involved in include, but are not limited to:

  • Disconnect switch replacements.
  • DC battery system replacements.
  • Transformer oil containment modifications.
  • Station equipment and protection upgrades.
  • Existing station modifications or additions.
