- The candidate must answer, screen, and route all incoming telephone calls.
- The candidate must determine appropriate referrals and connect callers with the correct section or staff member.
- The candidate must take and relay messages when staff members are unavailable.
- The candidate must respond to routine public and internal inquiries by phone and at the reception counter.
- The candidate must direct visitors to the appropriate department or contact.
- The candidate must maintain awareness of section personnel and their functional responsibilities.
- The candidate must type correspondence, reports, memoranda, and related documents.
- The candidate must prepare routine correspondence using standard formats.
- The candidate must file and index correspondence and office records.
- The candidate must provide clerical assistance and support overflow work from sections as needed.
- The candidate must perform related duties as required.
Job Requirements
- The candidate must have excellent knowledge and skill in operating a switchboard.
- The candidate must have knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
- The candidate must have the ability to memorize factual information related to Municipal Departments and interpret this data effectively.
- The candidate must speak clearly, distinctly, and with a pleasant voice.
- The candidate must deal courteously and tactfully with the public and RCMP personnel.
- The candidate must demonstrate the ability to maintain sustained attention to detail.
- The candidate must be proficient in operating standard office equipment and, where required by the Section function, demonstrate a minimum typing speed of 60 w.p.m. using a typewriter.
- The candidate must have the ability to compose routine letters and memoranda.
- The candidate must understand and execute oral and written instructions effectively.
- The candidate must perform routine clerical duties and moderately complex typing tasks.
- The candidate must have good knowledge of business English, spelling, and punctuation.
- The candidate must have good knowledge of office procedures and demonstrate skills in typing and transcribing machine dictation.
- The candidate must perform police computer data entry and retrieve information accurately.
- The candidate must have high school graduation supplemented by switchboard and typing training.
- The candidate must have some switchboard operation and receptionist experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- The candidate must have training in public relations or equivalent experience and understand its importance as a “front line” function within a public service.
Security and safety
- The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain an RCMP Security Clearance.
Work Conditions
- The candidate will be required to work hours established under Schedule “B” (M) in accordance with Article 12.01, with shifts scheduled at the discretion of the RCMP Commanding Officer or an authorized representative.
- The candidate will be required to work any seven (7) hours between 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 midnight, Monday through Sunday, as assigned by the RCMP Commanding Officer or authorized representative.
- The candidate will receive shift differentials in accordance with Article 13.10.
- The candidate will receive shift preference based on seniority when shifts change or when employees are hired into available positions.
