Job summary

The City of Maple Ridge is seeking Victim Services Caseworkers in an auxiliary capacity to support crime and trauma victims. You will deliver crisis intervention, information and referrals, and assist with court processes while maintaining confidential client files.

Successful candidates will have Grade 12 education with social science coursework and relevant experience in a police or victim services setting; RCMP Enhanced Reliability clearance and BC Class 5 license are required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of the 12th school grade, supplemented by courses in sociology, psychology, criminology or related discipline, plus considerable related experience in a police environment or victim services.
  • Knowledge of documenting client contacts and maintaining files.
  • Ability to provide crisis intervention and follow-up support to victims and witnesses.

  • Prepare and update resource materials, respond to information requests, and perform general administrative duties.
  • Represent the program on committees, as required.
  • Provide support, guidance, and training to volunteers.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The City of Maple Ridge is hiring Victim Services Caseworkers in an auxiliary capacity. In this role the successful incumbents will provide direct support services to crime and trauma victims and witnesses. The incumbent provides crisis intervention support, information, and referrals at the scene of crimes, domestic disputes and other serious incidents, as well as follow-up and court support services. Other duties may include providing information to victims on available resources and liaising with agencies to provide immediate services; making referrals to appropriate agencies for services such as counselling, financial assistance, childcare and legal advice; establishes and maintains client files documenting services provided; research available community resources; provides guidance and support to volunteers.

What You'll Do:

  • Maintain accurate, confidential client files and document services provided in accordance with program policies.
  • Prepare and update resource materials, respond to information requests, and perform general administrative duties.
  • Represent the program on committees, as required.
  • Provide support, guidance, and training to volunteers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Considerable knowledge of the procedures, rules and regulations related to the work.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and terminology used in documenting client contacts and maintaining related files.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of crisis intervention and follow-up support as related to the work performed.
  • Sound knowledge of available community resources.
  • Working knowledge of court and police procedures as they relate to the work performed.
  • Ability to effectively provide direct services to victims and witnesses of crime and trauma, including emotional support, information and referrals, often under stressful circumstances.
  • Ability to prepare records related to the work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Sound knowledge of the organizational structure and functions of the detachment and of the rules, policies, procedures and regulations which govern the work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to develop and disseminate information updates and correspondence.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts. Sound working knowledge of computer software applications related to the work performed.
  • Working knowledge of court and police procedures as they relate to the work performed.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of the 12th school grade, supplemented by courses in the field of social science including sociology, psychology, criminology or a related discipline, plus considerable related experience in a police environment, victim services program, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

REQUIRED LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES
  • RCMP Enhanced Reliability Security Clearance.
  • Class 5 Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position is based on a seven (7) hour day, thirty-five (35) hour work week between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m. and may be required to work more than five (5) consecutive shifts in a week or more than 35 hours in a week without overtime rates being paid. It is understood that appropriate overtime rates are to be paid only for all hours worked in excess of seventy (70) hours in a two (2) week period. The seven (7) hours need not be consecutive.

HOURS OF WORK:

This position will be required to work varying shifts, days, evenings, weekends and may be called out to attend incidents in progress. This is an auxiliary position with no ongoing schedule of hours.
