Job summary

Yellowknife Education District No. 1 is seeking a Receptionist/Communications Support for the YK1 District Office. The role reports as Communications Officer and handles front-desk duties while coordinating the district's public relations and communications activities.

Candidate must have a degree in communications and at least five years in a related role, with strong proficiency in Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and website management. A Vulnerable Sector Check is required before employment.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, website management, and other applicable software systems.
  • Experience managing an organization's communications plan, including social media under direction of district leadership.

Job description

Yellowknife Education District No. 1 invites applications for the following position:

Receptionist/Communications Support

YK1 District Office

Full Time (100%) FTE

The function of this position is to serve as the Communications Officer for the District and as the first point of contact for the public and district employees. This position is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering the District's public relations and communications activities based on the direction from the District's Executive. Given regular access to sensitive district, personnel, and student information, the Communications Officer is expected to exercise courtesy, tact, and discretion, and to maintain confidentiality at all times.

Qualifications include, but may not be limited to:
  • A degree in a specialized communications discipline such as journalism or public/media relations. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of five years' experience as a secretary, administrative assistant, office manager, or communications-related role.
  • Skilled in operational technology such as office equipment, and a receptionist's phone station.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 (including Word, Publisher, and Excel), Google Workspace, website management, and other applicable software systems.
  • Experience managing an organization's communications plan, including social media under the direction of the district's executive.
  • Ability to direct efficient front-office routines and to maintain positive interpersonal relationships with the public and district employees.
  • Ability to communicate with courtesy, tact, and discretion, and to maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive district, personnel, or student information

Candidates must have an original acceptable Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) in place. The original VSC must be dated within 90 days of the date the application is received. This is a condition of employment, and must be in place prior to commencing work in the school district.
