About Blue J
Blue J is the leading solution in generative AI for tax experts. We’re a B2B SaaS company whose customers are accountants and lawyers, and our AI-tax research software is the best in the market.
We are racing ahead with an exciting product development roadmap to continue to delight our customers and to ensure that our users can generate the very best possible tax research answers in the service of their clients in record time.
Since launching our flagship Generative AI product, we have blown past our revenue targets quarter over quarter, and are looking for a QA Strategist to help us scale. We’ve also just announced our Series C funding and are looking for someone to help drive our growth, scale our efforts, and seize new opportunities in this exciting phase!
A Note on Location
We are excited to meet with qualified candidates and are grateful for everyone’s interest. Please note that this is a hybrid position requiring applicants to be within commuting distance of Toronto and able to work collaboratively in person once per week. All candidates must be eligible to work in Canada.
The Opportunity
As QA Strategist, you’ll help shape how we build quality into our product from initial specification through to production. This isn’t a rote testing role. You’ll be applying systems thinking to explore features and help define the requirements themselves. You will collaborate across Engineering, Product, and Customer teams to ensure that every release makes the product better.
You’ll play a pivotal role in strengthening our understanding of how our system behaves in the real world -- testing its boundaries, learning from users, and helping define quality practices that rein in the complexity of LLM-backed systems. You’ll contribute to tools, write or review code where needed, and collaborate across the stack to catch problems early.
We’re looking for someone who’s technically sharp, curious, and has a bias towards action. You uncover blind spots, think holistically about user experience, and help the team build with confidence.
What You’ll be Doing
- Leading exploratory testing and validation of new features
- Investigating bugs, user feedback, and working with developers to identify root causes and develop solutions
- Collaborating with Product to devise test scenarios that align with real-world user problems
- Maintaining clear and concise documentation of features and requirements
- Expanding our LLM evaluation tools to help us gain confidence in algorithmic improvements
- Contributing to lean regression testing practices tailored to the risks for any given release
- Writing lightweight tools/utilities to support testing workflows, and occasionally fixing bugs in production code
What You Offer Blue J
- 3 to 5 years of experience in quality-focused role
- A technical background: you understand how software systems function beyond test cases, and are comfortable reading and debugging code
- A sense of ownership: you take initiative and work independently on high-impact tasks
- Comfortable writing scripts to automate QA tasks and aid testing efforts
- Strong written communication: you document findings clearly and help others reason about quality
- A user-first mindset: you think in terms of product impact, not just technical correctness
- Interest in LLMs, prompt evaluation, and the unique challenges inherent to generative AI systems
- Prior experience in high-growth startups or agile environments is preferred
- Disposition toward working on high-impact tasks and showing initiative day-to-day
Technologies You Can Expect to Work With
- We work in TypeScript and Python
- Monitoring & analytics tools like Datadog, Sentry, and Mixpanel
- LLM APIs and accompanying evaluation frameworks
What We Offer You
- An incredibly exciting and rare opportunity to be an early team member shaping how we confidently ship code at a rapidly growing company. We’re building a revolutionary tool from the ground up, and you will have a meaningful role in shaping the team that builds it.
- We are flexible! Most of the time, you'll be able to work remotely if you prefer. We have an office in downtown Toronto that we'll ask you to come into once a week, but outside of that, where you work is up to you!
- We’re well-funded and offer competitive base salaries and stock options. You’ll play a crucial role in our growth, and it’s important to us that you share in our long-term success.
- We care about you as a whole person. You’ll have a healthy work/life balance and colleagues who respect it. We’ve mindfully put together a great benefits package that covers you and your family.
- We’ve got an amazing team. We’re mission-driven and motivated by success, but we’re friendly, we’re collaborative, and we care about each other.
- We’ve got all the start-up perks you’d expect, and are intentionally building a culture where you can pickleball if you want, feel safe to be yourself at work, and watch your career grow because your team has invested in you.
The Core Values that Define Our Culture
- We are customer-focused
- We put the team interest before self-interest
- We are pleasant and playful
- We are open to better ideas
- We deliver on our promises
- We solve the toughest problems
We believe our strength is built on diversity of thought, and encourage candidates from all backgrounds and experiences to apply. We value inclusiveness and are an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate based on race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
We strive to create an inclusive and accessible hiring experience for all candidates. If you need any accommodations during the interview process, please let us know in your application. Our team is dedicated to providing the necessary support and making reasonable adjustments to ensure a smooth process for everyone.
We anticipate a high volume of applications. A real human will review every application, and we aim to begin reviewing profiles starting May 26.
