Job summary

Western Manitoba Regional Library in Downtown Brandon is seeking a Programming Assistant to help design and run library programs for patrons of all ages. You will support registrations, promotions, and travel to rural branches to facilitate programming, while maintaining statistics and assisting patrons with eResources and devices.

The role requires strong communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently in a busy public library environment.

Qualifications

  • Experience with programming in a public library setting.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to use various software.
  • Familiarity with electronic devices.
  • Ability to assist patrons with eResources and devices.
  • Good language skills and ability to follow directions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and enjoyment of teaching all ages.
  • Ability to work independently and solve minor problems.
  • Physically able to do light lifting and cleaning.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Manager of Programming and other Programming Assistants to create and facilitate library programs for all types of library patrons.
  • Manage program communications and registrations.
  • Create promotional materials for programs.
  • Coordinate with regional staff to promote programs and share resources.
  • Willing to travel to rural branches to help facilitate programming in other locations.
  • Maintain programming statistics.
  • Assist patrons in accessing the collection, including placing requests for patrons, and providing assistance with eResources and electronic devices.
  • Facilitate the circulation of library material by checking items in and out.
  • Process registrations and renewals, process payments (fines, memberships, etc.) and assist in maintaining statistics.
  • Notify patrons of Holds over the phone and by email.
  • Answer public inquiries, including via telephone and email.
  • Answer reference questions, and perform internet and catalogue searches.
  • Create and maintain book displays.
  • Inform patrons of library policies and practices.
  • Interfile and shelve books and other materials.
  • Shelf read and perform light cleaning.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with programming in a public library setting
  • Good computer knowledge and proficiency, comfortable using different software
  • Familiarity with electronic devices
  • Comfortable learning about and explaining various library eResources and providing assistance to patrons
  • Good language skills and ability to follow directions
  • Strong interpersonal skills, enjoys interacting with the public, comfortable teaching people of all ages
  • Ability to work independently and solve minor problems
  • Physically able to do light lifting and cleaning duties
