Job summary

The Library Program Assistant Summer Student is a full‑time temporary role (35 hours/week, 1‑year term) located in Whycocomagh, NS, and employed by the Municipality of the County of Inverness to operate the Whycocomagh Public Library.

You will work independently when needed, deliver library services per ECRL policies, provide visitor information, support bookings and programming, record usage, and help maintain a welcoming, safe environment.

Qualifications

  • Public service experience.
  • Proficiency with computers including Microsoft 365; ability to learn ECRL library systems.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 20 lbs., bend, reach, and stand for extended periods.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safe work culture and confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the branch independently when required, including opening/closing and front-line service.
  • Deliver library services in line with ECRL policies: circulation, reference, collection maintenance, and programming.
  • Provide visitor information to residents and tourists regarding local attractions, services, and events.
  • Support municipal recreation rentals, including bookings, payments, and customer service.
  • Record library use statistics and submit required reports to the Municipality and ECRL.
  • Assist with community and cultural programming hosted at the library or Waterfront Centre.
  • Maintain a tidy, welcoming, and safe environment and report hazards promptly.

Job description

Department: Culture & Community Development

Reports To: Director of Culture & Community Development

Location: Whycocomagh, NS

Position: Full-Time; Temporary (35 hours per week; 1-year term)

The Whycocomagh Public Library is a municipally funded community library developed in partnership with Eastern Counties Regional Libraries (ECRL), located on the lower level of the Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre. In addition to full ECRL-aligned library services, the branch delivers municipal visitor information and community programming.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Library Program Assistant Summer Student is employed by the Municipality of the County of Inverness to operate the branch and deliver integrated services. The role requires the ability to work independently, including sole charge of the branch when needed—while maintaining consistent, high-quality public service across all areas.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operate the branch independently when required, including opening/closing, safety, and all front-line service.
  • Deliver library services in line with ECRL policies: circulation, reference, collection maintenance, and programming.
  • Provide visitor information to residents and tourists regarding local attractions, services, and events.
  • Support municipal recreation rentals, including bookings, payments, and customer service.
  • Record library use statistics and submit required reports to the Municipality and ECRL.
  • Assist with community and cultural programming hosted at the library or Waterfront Centre.
  • Maintain a tidy, welcoming, and safe environment and report hazards promptly.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Ability to execute verbal and written instructions, work independently or as part of a collaborative team, and demonstrate accountability, sound judgment, and initiative while maintaining required records.
  • Demonstrated public service experience.
  • Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft 365; ability to learn ECRL library systems
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Physical ability to lift up to 20 lbs., bend, reach, and stand for extended periods.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a safe work culture, incorporating safe work practices in daily activities.
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality with respect to all matters pertaining to the municipality.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Currently enrolled in, or recently completed, a post-secondary program.
  • Education in library science, tourism, recreation, community development, or a related field is not necessary, but considered and asset; equivalent education and experience will be considered.
SAFETY:

  • Ensure all policies and procedures set forth by the Municipality of the County of Inverness are always observed.
  • Report all work situations which are suspected of being unhealthy or unsafe.
  • Report any employee whose on-the-job performance or actions contravenes established safety procedures or work practices.
  • Report all near-misses and incidents
  • Report related injuries or property damage regardless of severity.
  • Submit reports on accidents and other hazardous conditions discovered and promptly attend to all hazardous situations.
  • Participate in site inspections and assist with the implementation of corrective actions as required.

  • The Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre facility may collaborate on programming but does not supervise or direct this role.
