Job summary

City of Winnipeg is seeking a Library Service Assistant 3 (Information Assistant) at Charleswood Library on a 18‑month, part‑time basis. The role delivers information services, readers advisory, programs, and community outreach while supporting a welcoming library experience.

The candidate will assist with databases, AV resources, and public computer sessions; will help plan and run programs for all ages and manage collections. Evening/weekend work is required.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent training/experience.
  • Ability in Reference/Reader's Advisory work is an asset.
  • Effective communication skills (oral & written).
  • Ability to interact with the public and staff.
  • Knowledge of literature and current affairs is helpful.
  • Proficiency with A.V. equipment is an asset.
  • Foreign credentials require Canadian equivalency assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist customers in-person, by phone, and online with information, readers advisory, and room bookings.
  • Instruct users on the Library's ILS, databases, and Internet resources.
  • Assist with eBooks, library booking system, and audiovisual resources as needed.
  • Help run computer training sessions and provide computer assistance.
  • Prepare and host programs for adults, teens, and children; assist with equipment setup.
  • Create posters, reading guides, and marketing materials.
  • Provide library tours and orientation sessions.

Salary: $26.78 - $31.92 hourly as per the Library Service Assistant 3 Classification within the C.U.P.E Collective Agreement.

Job Profile

Under the general direction of the Branch Head Librarian, the Information Assistant will interact with customers of all ages to help create a positive and welcoming library experience for all. The position will provide information, help customers access library services in physical and/or digital form and provide programs for all age and ability levels within the library and community.

As The Information Assistant, You Will
  • Assist customers in-person, over the telephone, and on-line with their information, readers advisory, and room booking needs.
  • Instruct customers in the use of the Library's ILS system, online databases, and Internet resources.
  • Assist customers with specialized resources and tools, such as eBooks, the Library Online Computer Booking system, and Audiovisual resources as required.
  • Assist with Public Computer training sessions and provide computer assistance as required.
  • Prepare for and host adult, young adult and children's programs, including equipment set-up as required.
  • Provide programs for pre-schoolers and school age children.
  • Assist in the creation of posters, booklists, reading guides and other marketing tools as assigned.
  • Provide tours and orientation sessions as required.
  • Assist in the maintenance and development of the collection.
  • Take charge of the library or section in the absence of the Branch or Section Head or designate.
  • Assist in promoting library materials and services.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the classification as required.
Your Education And Qualifications Include
  • Undergraduate degree or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Ability in Reference/Reader's Advisory work an asset.
  • Ability to provide assistance to both children and adults.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public and staff members.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Must possess a good general knowledge of literature and a variety of subject areas, as well as of current affairs and trends.
  • Ability to operate A.V. equipment an asset.
