Job summary

Thumbtack is seeking an Applied Scientist to join the Pro Growth team in Canada. You will build models and experiments to grow pro activation, retention, and supply health across Ontario and British Columbia markets, using ML, causal inference, and optimization at scale.

You will own problem framing, experiment design, deployment to production, and measurement of business impact, while collaborating with engineers, PMs, BD, and marketing to deliver end-to-end ML solutions for a healthy

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a quantitative field or equivalent industry experience.
• 3+ years building and owning production ML models.
• Experience in a marketplace, supply chain, or growth domain.
• Solid knowledge of ML techniques including classification, regression, embeddings, and causal inference.
• Familiarity with modern LLMs and agentic AI development practices.
• Strong knowledge of probability, statistics, econometrics, experimental design, causal inference, and optimization.
• Experience with large-scale distributed systems (Spark, Databricks).
• Proficiency in Python and SQL.
• Strong problem-solving and cross-functional collaboration.
• Proven track record delivering production ML projects.

Responsibilities

• Initiate and drive applied science projects with business impact on pro acquisition, activation, retention, and supply health.
• Develop, deploy, and optimize ML models for supply-side problems such as lead scoring, market forecasting, onboarding and retention.
• Design and execute well-powered marketplace experiments to measure model and product impact.
• Analyze structured and unstructured data to identify trends, opportunities, and risks related to supply health.
• Collaborate with engineering, product, BD, and marketing to implement end-to-end ML solutions in production.
• Maintain balance between speed of execution and scientific rigor in a fast-paced marketplace.
• Contribute to agentic-first workflows, including LLM-powered tooling and evaluation coverage.
