Job summary

Calvert Home Mortgage Investment Corporation in Calgary, hybrid work arrangement, seeks an experienced Underwriter to assess mortgage applications and structure lending solutions. You will balance risk with customer needs, working with brokers and internal teams to move deals forward.

The role requires 2+ years in private/alternative underwriting, strong credit judgment, and knowledge of lending regulations.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of direct mortgage underwriting experience in private or alternative lending.
• Experience reviewing and adjudicating mortgage applications, including assessing credit, capacity, collateral.
• Knowledge of mortgage lending laws and regulations and underwriting policies.
• Strong communication and active listening skills.
• Availability for regular local property inspections and occasional travel.

Responsibilities

• Review mortgage applications and documents; evaluate credit, capacity, collateral, and market conditions.
• Complete due diligence, make decisions within authority, and present recommendations on files outside limits.
• Follow underwriting policies, record decisions in CRM, prepare commitment letters, and review reporting.
• Build relationships with brokers and clients to support retention and identify opportunities.
• Represent Calvert’s values in communications and support business development; nurture leads.
• Review arrears files and update reports for senior management; support process improvements.
• Work across departments, coach new team members, and assist in training.
