Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of direct mortgage underwriting experience.
  • Experience reviewing mortgage applications and assessing borrower risk.
  • Ability to make lending decisions within authority and escalate outside limits.
  • Knowledge of mortgage lending laws and underwriting procedures.
  • Strong research, analysis, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; underwriting software is a plus.
  • High school diploma; post-secondary education is an asset.
  • Willingness to travel for client visits.

WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?

You already know that alternative lending isn’t about checking boxes. Every file has a story, and great underwriting means knowing which questions to ask, where the real risk sits, and how to find a solution that makes sense for both the borrower and the lender.

That’s where you come in.

As an Underwriter at Calvert, you’ll use your experience and judgment to assess mortgage applications, structure solutions, and make sound lending decisions in an environment where no two files are quite the same. You’ll work closely with brokers and our internal teams to move deals forward while balancing responsive service with responsible lending.

We’re looking for someone who already understands the pace, complexity, and creativity of private and alternative mortgage lending and is ready to continue building their expertise, lending authority, and impact.

HOW DO WE WORK?

We work as trusted advisors, providing short-term lending solutions for the personal and financial success of our clients. Underwriters collaborate with business development, valuation, funding, and other teams to understand each file, apply our lending policies, and make timely decisions. We value thoughtful judgment, clear communication, and a proactive approach in a fast-paced environment.

HOW DO YOU FIT IN?

You will bring the following experience and strengths:

  • A minimum of 2 years of direct mortgage underwriting experience within the private or alternative lending space. This is a requirement for the role.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing and adjudicating mortgage applications, including assessing borrower credit, capacity, collateral, property information, and overall lending risk.
  • Experience making and documenting lending decisions within assigned authority and escalating or recommending files outside of authority limits.
  • Knowledge of mortgage lending laws and regulations and a strong understanding of underwriting policies, procedures, and due diligence requirements.
  • Sound research, analysis, and decision-making skills, with the ability to identify risk while also looking for practical lending solutions.
  • Strong communication and active listening skills for building effective relationships with mortgage brokers, borrowers, and internal partners.
  • The ability to manage multiple active files and competing priorities while providing timely, responsive service and maintaining strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with underwriting or mortgage management software is an asset.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent. Post-secondary education or an applicable designation is considered an asset.
  • Availability for regular local property inspections and client visits, with occasional travel for trade shows or presentations.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Underwriting and Credit Decisions (70%)
  • Review mortgage applications and supporting documents; evaluate borrower credit, capacity, collateral, and relevant market conditions.
  • Complete due diligence, make decisions within your lending authority, and present recommendations on files outside your limits.
  • Follow underwriting policies and procedures, record decisions and tasks accurately in the CRM, prepare commitment letters, and review legal reporting.
Broker and Client Relationships (10%)
  • Build relationships with mortgage brokers, real estate investors, and builders; support client retention and identify potential mortgage opportunities.
  • Contribute to weekly underwriting sales and operations meetings.
Marketing and Business Development (10%)
  • Represent Calvert’s values in your communications, prepare or present content that supports business development, and nurture leads and new partnerships.
Arrears Management (5%)
  • Review and act on arrears and delinquency files and update reports for senior management.
Team And Process Support (5%)
  • Work across departments, help coach new team members and Underwriter Success Associates, and contribute to administrative training.
  • Support application intake and triage, identify process improvements, and continue developing your underwriting and mortgage management knowledge.
