Job description

Would you like to be part of a vibrant local government organization that is embarking on a number of exciting housing initiatives and deals with a wide diversity of development applications? Are you a service-oriented individual who would like to contribute your expertise and thrives in a fast-paced environment? Delta’s Development Department is a growing and performance-driven team that has exceeded the first-year Provincial Housing Target, adopted a new visionary Official Community Plan and successfully implemented a number of bold housing policy initiatives. The City of Delta is seeking an experienced professional planner to join the Development Department and help shape the future of development in Delta.

Reporting to the Manager of Development Planning and/or Manager of Priority Projects, the Planner 2 will process development and land use applications of a moderate to complex nature, including multi-unit residential, mixed-use, and major industrial, agricultural and commercial projects. The position may support the Community Planning Division in the development of housing policies as well as other projects and initiatives aligned with Council’s priorities. Workload would be assigned based on both your skill-set and departmental needs.

We are looking for a creative and detail-oriented team leader, experienced project manager, critical thinker, self-starter, and strong communicator. In addition to a degree in Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture or related fields, the ideal candidate should have:

  • In-depth knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques and methods applicable to contemporary land use planning and urban design.
  • Experience managing and coordinating medium to large-sized development projects in the private and/or public sectors.
  • Considerable experience processing and providing comprehensive technical review comments and the preparation of reports for development applications of various types and complexity.
  • A strong track record of successfully providing project oversight and management, including the supervision of professional or technical staff and external consultants, and coordination of multi-disciplinary teams as needed.
  • Strong communication skills with significant experience in public engagement and consultation, and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders and the public.
  • Several years of experience providing exceptional professional service to clients and customers.
  • Considerable knowledge of relevant land use planning regulations, policies, bylaws and legislation in British Columbia and the City of Delta.

Membership or eligibility for Candidate Membership with the Planning Institute of British Columbia and the Canadian Institute of Planners is required. In addition, membership or eligibility for membership in the British Columbia Society of Landscape Architecture and/or the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects is also considered an asset. This position requires a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence.

* In addition to the hourly rate, this position receives a market adjustment premium of $3.25/hour until further notice, subject to the Market Adjustment Premiums (Planners) Letter of Understanding between CUPE 454 and the City.
