Job description

Developmental Support Worker / Personal Support Worker - London, ON - CAD$108.00/week

Description

About the Client:

We are seeking a compassionate caregiver for a gentleman living with frontal lobe dementia in London, Ontario. He is aware of his diagnosis and experiences cognitive challenges including memory loss, confusion, and occasional delusions. While he is not aggressive, he can become confused and may misinterpret physical touch. He values his independence and does not like feeling trapped or controlled. He is generally pleasant and polite, especially in his home environment, though his condition is progressing more rapidly than initially expected. He speaks Spanish as his first language and is reverting to it more frequently as his dementia progresses, though he still communicates in English. He enjoys walking and was previously a marathon runner, though his walks are now much shorter. He attends a community program on Thursdays and Fridays.

Responsibilities:

Provide companionship and social engagement to reduce loneliness and isolation. Assist with light meal preparation, primarily reheating pre-prepared food and providing reminders to eat. Help with light tidying and household tasks, engaging the client in activities like folding laundry to help him feel useful and involved. Accompany him on walks around the neighborhood or local mall. Provide memory prompts and gentle redirection when needed. Monitor his medication dispensing machine and assist if he becomes confused by the alarm. Ensure his safety during visits and watch for any concerning changes in behavior or cognition. Engage him in meaningful activities that make him feel he is participating in life rather than being cared for.

What We're Looking For:

Experience working with clients with dementia, particularly frontal lobe dementia. Bilingual in English and Spanish, or at least conversational Spanish skills. Patient, calm, and gentle approach with excellent understanding of trauma-informed care. Ability to engage clients in activities while respecting their autonomy and dignity. Strong communication skills with both the client and family members. Reliable, takes initiative, and brings positive energy. Understanding of how to redirect without confrontation and how to help someone feel useful and engaged.

Schedule:

We are starting with a few visits per week, likely Monday and Wednesday mornings, with flexibility as the client adjusts to receiving care. Each visit will be approximately two hours. The client attends a community program on Thursdays and Fridays, so care is needed primarily at the beginning of the week.
