Description
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a remarkable 93-year-old woman living in a retirement community in Collingwood, Ontario. She is an independent, intelligent, and vibrant individual who recently moved to a different unit after her husband of 75 years transitioned to the memory care ward. While she remains remarkably capable, she's experiencing some memory changes and would greatly benefit from regular companionship and social engagement. She speaks both English and German, and it's important that her caregiver can communicate in both languages to help her feel most comfortable.
This role focuses primarily on companionship and cognitive support. You'll spend time with her during evening visits, taking her for walks around the community or outside when weather permits, accompanying her to get a pedicure or out for meals, and simply sitting together to chat and watch movies. The goal is to provide meaningful social interaction and help keep her active—movement is essential, as the current facility routine doesn't provide enough opportunity for her to get out and about. You may need to provide gentle memory prompts or redirection as needed. Occasionally, you'll drive her to nearby appointments or outings. There is no housekeeping, meal preparation, medication management, or personal care required—she handles these independently.
We need a female caregiver who is warm, patient, and brings positive energy. You should be comfortable working with seniors experiencing memory changes and understand the importance of building trust and rapport. The family would like you to introduce yourself as a friend to help her feel more at ease accepting your companionship. You must be bilingual in English and German, reliable, and able to take initiative during visits. Strong communication skills are essential, as you'll be providing regular updates to the family. Experience with cognitive support and dementia care is highly valued. A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle for occasional outings is required.
This is a recurring weekly position every Wednesday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, starting immediately and continuing for at least three months. The timing coincides with the evening hours when she may experience sundowning, so patience and understanding during these times is important.
