JOB SUMMARY: The Mental Wellness Manager (MWM) works within an integrated, multi-disciplinary Health team to provide administrative direction and support to the mental wellness team. Reporting to the Health Director, the Mental Wellness Manager provides leadership to the mental wellness team who are providing counselling and support to individuals and families experiencing mental health and addictions. Specifically, engaging Tsleil-Waututh membership in culturally competent, trauma informed, programs and services.

The MWM will also oversee the budget and financial health of the team. The Mental Wellness Manager will be familiar with other services and resources in the community and work closely to provide information and support when required to the team.

Finally, the Mental Wellness Manager will provide HR, office management, administration and strategic oversight to the team, in addition to supporting the Health Director in working with key partners and stakeholders in strategic planning and program development for Mental Wellness. This includes leading the implementation of a crisis response plan for the community, overseeing the T’soutin peer program, as well as strengthening the case management system, creating and updating policy and procedures for the department, and continuing to maintain a client centred and decolonizing approach to mental wellness for the nation.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Oversee and supervise the MW team including the peer support program and peer coordinator. Give individual administrative supervision to team members, on a weekly basis, if required.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Lead to oversee the direction of the clinical counselling staff.
  • Implement and lead weekly admin team meetings, overseeing the administrative work of the mental wellness team, making sure communication for the team is effective and helpful.
  • Oversee programming planning for the entire team and maintain communications both internally and externally for all programming that includes program outlines, poster design, and other forms of reaching community members for engagement.
  • Create public discourse, educational mental health information to deliver to the TWN community on issues relating to mental wellness and addictions that might include writing articles for the newsletter and public education sharing.
  • Maintain the financial health of the department with budgeting oversight and planning in concert with the Health Director, tracking spending and individual budgets.
  • Oversee the completion of weekly accounting and invoicing, making sure all payments flow in a timely manner.
  • In collaboration with the Clinical Lead, implement an integrated case management system for the mental wellness and interdisciplinary departmental approach to wellness.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of crisis management and the impact of trauma on mental health and addiction issues.
  • Collaborate with the Peer Support Lead to develop and oversee the implementation a new crisis plan and the training of a crisis response team for the community.
  • Collaborate with the Peer Support Lead to oversee the Peer Support Workers and peer programming within community.
  • In collaboration with mental wellness team and the Clinical Lead, improve systems of case filing, confidentiality protocols, and policy and procedures for the mental wellness team, updating and maintaining the digital filing system.
  • Carry out orientations for new staff, overseeing the equipment, space requirements and making sure all staff on the team have required equipment needed to undertake their roles.
  • Supervision of non-counselling practicum students – verification and support of students’ reported practicum hours and practicum documents in adherence with their academic requirements.
  • In keeping with strategic planning goals of the department and community, support the implementation of these objectives and develop the mental wellness team’s overall effectiveness and health.
  • The MWM will develop and maintain positive working relations in collaboration with internal Managers, external agencies and community service providers regarding these services, and, as an Indigenous health service, will support and promote a holistic approach that will work effectively with culturally and economically diverse populations.
  • Advocate and represent TWN’s voice at the partnership level with external committees, organizations, and bodies that are focused on improving mental health services on the north shore and in other Indigenous communities.
  • Oversee external funding opportunities, proposal writing and reporting on grants and to funders.
  • Complete other duties where necessary to execute Mental Wellness Team community events or delivery of programming.

Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, Social Work, or related discipline, or equivalency in education and on the job experience.
  • Knowledge / experience: Minimum of five years’ experience working with people struggling with mental health and/or addiction problems and managing teams; Practice from a harm reduction, strength based philosophy; Trauma informed applied practice; Comprehensive knowledge of client centered mental health and addictions; Knowledge of First Nation community resources, treatment centres, social service networks and organizations; Knowledge of funding agencies available to assist clients in accessing needed support services and community resources; experience providing direct administrative supervision; Working knowledge of computer software (email, internet) and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook), and Electronic Management Record systems (OSCAR).

  • Ability to deal with demanding interpersonal situations and respond with good judgment and understanding.
  • Ability to communicate information effectively through a variety of means including meetings, reports, letters and presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and make independent decisions.
  • Ability to think critically and be innovative to create/modify strategy or intervention techniques to suit the individual needs of the department and community.
  • Ability to strategize and think in visionary ways to navigate the team forward.
  • Preference to those that self-identify as First Nation.
  • Must provide a Criminal Records Check with vulnerable sector screening.
