Job summary

CPKC, North America’s first transnational railroad, seeks a Manager, Freight Claims & Damage Prevention to lead a critical function that safeguards the company’s financial interests and ensures superior customer service across Canada and the U.S.

You will oversee end-to-end investigations, fair liability determinations, settlements, and risk-reduction initiatives while driving data-driven process improvements and technology enhancements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Transportation, Logistics, Risk Management, Law, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in freight claims, transportation liability, risk management, supply chain, logistics, or insurance claims.

Responsibilities

  • Lead CPKC's Freight Claim Center, overseeing all commodity loss, damage, and delay claims across the Canadian and U.S. network.
  • Manage the end-to-end investigation, assessment, and resolution of freight claims to ensure fair liability determination and timely claim closure.
  • Protect CPKC's financial interests by minimizing liability exposure, improving third-party recoveries, and reducing litigation risk.
  • Negotiate claim settlements with customers, third parties, and connecting rail carriers while maintaining strong business relationships.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and development for a team of unionized and non-unionized employees, fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Drive continuous improvement through data analysis, root cause identification, process optimization, and technology enhancements.
  • Establish departmental objectives, monitor performance metrics, and conduct regular audits to ensure compliance and operational excellence.
  • Partner with Operations, Legal, customers, industry stakeholders, and executive leadership on freight claims and liability matters.
  • Support incident and derailment response efforts through commodity assessments, field investigations, and reporting as required.
  • Champion the strategic direction of freight claims and damage prevention programs, delivering best-in-class service while optimizing CPKC's commodity liability outcomes.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

As the Manager, Freight Claims & Damage Prevention, you will lead a critical function that protects CPKC's financial interests and supports exceptional customer service across North America's only single-line rail network connecting Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. Overseeing the resolution of commodity freight loss, damage, and delay claims, you will drive fair and timely outcomes, optimize liability decisions, and develop proactive strategies to prevent future losses. Working closely with customers, operations, and business leaders, you will help strengthen relationships, reduce risk, and deliver measurable value to the organization through strategic leadership and operational excellence.

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
