Job summary

Smurfit Westrock in Guelph, Ontario is seeking an Industrial Millwright Apprentice to join the maintenance team. The role supports night shifts Monday to Friday and requires a clean background check and pre-employment medical.

The position involves troubleshooting plant equipment, coordinating preventative maintenance, assisting with boiler systems, and contributing to safety initiatives. A high school diploma and millwright training are required, with overtime as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma is required.
• Enrolled in Industrial Millwright/Mechanical course; pursuing Certification of Industrial Millwright 433A.
• Experience in a manufacturing environment is an asset.
• Technical knowledge is required.
• Physically fit and able to work physically demanding tasks.
• Willing to work steady night shift – Monday to Friday.
• Overtime as required.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot problems on plant equipment and determine maintenance requirements; identify root causes and implement long-term solutions.
• Assist with machinery breakdowns and determine temporary vs permanent solutions based on production timelines.
• Maintain preventative maintenance programs and ensure regular checks and lubrication on all equipment.
• Assist Maintenance Department with boiler systems, heating, steam, and energy supply operations.
• Assist in minor electrical repairs and safe resetting of systems.
• Assist in installation of plant equipment and occasionally assist in equipment design.
• Identify required fits for various services, including antifriction bearings; perform necessary fits.
• Handle heavy equipment safely and have knowledge of foundation work.
• Assist in developing the plant occupational health and safety program.

Job description

The Smurfit Westrock Guelph facility is looking for an Industrial Millwright Apprentice to work as part of the maintenance team. We currently have an opening on steady nights – Monday to Friday. Shifts are subject to change based on business needs.

All successful applicants must be able to provide a satisfactory criminal background check and pre-employment medical.

Job Duties:

• Troubleshoot problems on plant equipment and facilitate and determine maintenance requirements. Ability to go to root cause of problems. Perform proper follow-up on repairs to implement long-term solutions.
• Assist with machinery breakdowns on plant equipment, facility, and building. Ability to determine the need for temporary solutions or permanent solutions based on time constraints given by production.
• Maintain preventative maintenance programs and ensures regular checks and lubrication on all equipment.
• Assist Maintenance Department with maintaining operation of the boiler systems, heating, steam, and energy supply.
• Assist in minor electrical repairs and reset safely.
• Assists with the installation of plant equipment and occasionally assists in equipment design.
• Know what fits are required for various services, including antifriction bearings and be able to make such fits.
• Be able to handle heavy equipment safely and have knowledge of foundation work.
• Assists in the development of the plant occupational health and safety program.

What you need to work at Smurfit Westrock:

• High school diploma
• 3 rd or 4 th year millwright apprentice - enrolled in Industrial Millwright/Mechanical course and pursuing Certification of Industrial Millwright 433A license
• Experience in a manufacturing environment considered an asset
• Technical knowledge
• Physically fit
• Able to work steady night shift – Monday to Friday
• Able to work overtime as required.
