Job summary

A Labour Relations Staff Officer (LRSO) opportunity with the Society of United Professionals, in Saskatchewan, focusing on member advocacy and growth.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Operations and Governance Affairs, you’ll advise Local representatives, handle grievances, and support bargaining, arbitration, and policy development to strengthen member engagement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Juris Doctor (J.D.), Master’s in Labour Relations or equivalent.
  • Five+ years progressive experience in labour relations including bargaining and arbitration prep.
  • Experience independently preparing and arguing labour arbitration cases.
  • Strong knowledge of labour legislation, arbitral jurisprudence, and union operations.
  • Experience supporting organizing campaigns and union growth is a plus.

  • Provide expert labour relations advice to members and elected Local leaders on bargaining, grievances, and workplace issues.
  • Research, prepare, and advocate arbitration cases and represent members effectively.
  • Build trusted relationships with local leaders, members and employers to support constructive relations.
  • Mentor elected officials to strengthen leadership and representation.
  • Support collective bargaining initiatives, prepare proposals, and assist with mediation.

The Society of United Professionals is seeking a Labour Relations Staff Officer to support members, elected leaders, and the continued growth of the Society's presence in Saskatchewan. This newly created position represents an opportunity to have a direct impact on member advocacy, labour relations outcomes, leadership development, and union growth.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Operations and Governance Affairs, the LRSO will serve as a trusted advisor to Local representatives and members, providing expert support on grievances, collective bargaining, arbitration, workplace issues, labour legislation, and member engagement initiatives. The role also plays a key part in building constructive employer relationships and strengthening the Society's operational presence in Saskatchewan.

We're looking for a labour relations professional who can:
  • Provide expert labour relations advice and practical guidance to members and elected Local leaders on collective bargaining, grievances, workplace issues, human rights, and employment-related matters.
  • Independently research, prepare, and advocate labour arbitration cases and represent members effectively in complex labour relations matters.
  • Build trusted relationships with local leaders, members, employers, and external stakeholders while supporting constructive and collaborative labour relations.
  • Mentor and support elected officials, strengthening leadership capacity and enhancing member representation.
  • Support collective bargaining initiatives, prepare proposals, and assist with mediation and dispute resolution processes.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Juris Doctor (J.D.), Master's degree in Labour Relations, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A law degree is strongly preferred.
  • Five or more years of progressive experience in labour relations, including collective bargaining, grievance handling, arbitration preparation, and advocacy.
  • Demonstrated experience independently preparing and arguing labour arbitration cases.
  • Strong knowledge of labour legislation, arbitral jurisprudence, collective agreements, and union operations.
  • Experience supporting organizing campaigns and union growth initiatives is considered a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the labour movement, member advocacy, and strengthening member engagement.
