Job summary

Suncor Edmonton Refinery in Sherwood Park, AB, invites a qualified chemist to join the Edmonton Laboratory and perform daily analyses. You will apply SOPs to crude oil, intermediates, and finished products, ensuring data accuracy and instrument integrity across wet chemistry and instrumental methods.

The role emphasizes safety, quality programs, and data reporting in a unionized, overtime-eligible setting with exposure to chemicals. A relevant degree and 5 years of lab experience are required.

Qualifications

• Chemistry technology diploma or bachelor in chemistry/science.
• 5 years of chemistry lab experience.
• Familiar with gasoline, diesel and jet fuel testing.
• Proficiency in wet chemistry and analytical instrumentation.
• Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) or SAP.
• Knowledge of ASTM methods for petroleum testing.

Responsibilities

• Execute daily laboratory analysis on crude oil, intermediates, and finished products using approved Standard Operating Procedures.
• Maintain, calibrate, and verify the performance of laboratory instruments (e.g., gas chromatographs, viscometers).
• Record and report analytical data accurately using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
• Collect, prepare, and analyze samples, including cleaning glassware and maintaining laboratory hygiene.
• Participate in lab quality programs and troubleshoot non-conformance trends.

Location and other key details

You will work out of our Edmonton refinery in Sherwood Park, located at 801 Petroleum Way.

The shift schedule is a 4 day a week with the requirement to work one weekend day every 5 weeks. with the potential for extended work. Hours will be based on business needs.

This position is a unionized, overtime eligible position.

Being in a laboratory, there is a significant risk of exposure to chemicals. The environment requires the use of PPE; safety boots, safety glasses, respiratory equipment, safety gloves, hearing protection, and specialized safety equipment (clothing, smocks, face shields). Must be able to climb stairs/ ladders and lift up to 50 lbs.
