Job Responsibilities

Oversees the operation and maintenance of teaching laboratories. Provides advice on laboratory setup, equipment acquisition, laboratory operation and monitoring, and maintenance. Develops and implements operating procedures and standards to ensure laboratory safety and overall organization and cleanliness. Controls equipment and chemical inventory. Recommends purchase, locates, and orders equipment and supplies.

Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  2. Mechanical skills to repair lab equipment.
  3. Ability to work with Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Two (2) years of laboratory work experience.
  2. Knowledge and experience in laboratory practices, inventory practices, hazardous waste management, EPA / OSHA regulations.
Physical Demands

Work is performed in a variety of settings including office, laboratory, and outdoor. May be exposed to a variety of temperatures, noise, moving parts, or chemicals. Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling. Occasional lifting of objects up to 50 pounds. Work requires occasional overnight travel. Work environment: The noise level in the work environment will be moderate to loud.

Advertised Job Duties
  • Prepare instructional laboratories for science courses.
  • Ensure that labs are equipped and ready for student sessions, including restocking supplies, routine cleaning, maintenance, certification, installation, and repair of equipment.
  • Maintain and inventory chemical stocks.
  • Organize, maintain, and inventory supplies.
  • Order laboratory supplies and manage hazardous waste.
  • Maintain monthly logs of chemical waste generated in the labs.
  • Maintain chemical inventory database.
  • Maintain safety records and Materials Safety Data Sheets.
  • Serve on campus HazMat committees regarding EPA and OSHA regulations.
  • Manage work study students, when applicable.
  • Provide safety training for students and other personnel as necessary.
  • Serve as point of contact for outside organizations regarding use of lab space, borrowing of equipment/supplies, etc.
  • Keep regular office hours.
  • Maintain communication with on-campus supervisors, Chairs, and Dean.
