Job summary

BC Hydro, located in Burnaby Edmonds area, seeks an Indigenous Relations Specialist for a two-year, full-time temporary role. The successful candidate will build and maintain First Nations relationships, advance reconciliation, and ensure effective execution of consultation processes.

Qualifications

  • University undergraduate degree in First Nations Studies, Public Administration, political science, land and resource management, law, anthropology, or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in a business environment, including public or private sector.
  • Subject matter expertise in First Nation relationship-building, consultation, and engagement, including proven experience working with Indigenous Peoples to advance projects and initiatives.
  • Preference will be given to the candidate who has experience in the clean energy sector.
  • Preference will be given to the candidate who has experience with project delivery, environmental assessment, preparing provincial and federal regulatory applications, and First Nation consultation requirements for capital projects.
  • Driver’s License: Class 5 in good standing as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain ongoing First Nations relationships, advancing reconciliation.
  • Lead relationships with First Nations in Southwest BC to promote collaboration and advance reconciliation.
  • Lead BC Hydro’s First Nations consultation on capital projects and related regulatory and provincial authorizations while ensuring consultation adequacy has been met.
  • Support compliance by meeting First Nation conditions and commitments under provincial and federal authorizations.
  • Lead the First Nations component on capital projects involving moderate to high relationship, legal, environmental, reputation, and other key risks.
  • Develop consultation plans during project scoping and identify consultation with Project Managers to execute the First Nation component.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of relationship management by applying persuasive influence and negotiation and building and maintaining trust within diverse communities.
  • Participate in researching, assessing, and developing business strategies pertaining to Indigenous Relations.
  • Evaluate the source and scope of complex situations during consultation stages and identify options for resolution.
  • Provide technical leadership to Project Coordinators and other junior roles across project planning, execution, and records management.
  • Act as a technical specialist and leader in First Nation engagement and support a wide range of operational areas.

  • The candidate will provide technical leadership to Project Coordinators and other junior roles across all aspects of project planning, execution, documentation, records management, and relationship management with First Nations.
  • The candidate will act as a technical specialist and leader in First Nation engagement and support a wide range of operational areas within BC Hydro in addressing and resolving actual or potential conflicts between BC Hydro interests and First Nation communities.
Job Requirements
  • The candidate must hold a University Undergraduate degree in First Nations Studies, Public Administration, political science, land and resource management, law, anthropology, or a related discipline or equivalent.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in a business environment, including the public or private sector, preferably a resource based organization.
  • The candidate must have subject matter expertise in First Nation relationship-building, consultation, and engagement, including proven experience working with Indigenous Peoples to advance projects and initiatives.
  • Preference will be given to the candidate who has experience in the clean energy sector.
