Job summary

A leading health unit in Windsor seeks a Registered Practical Nurse on a full-time contract basis for up to 17 months. In this role, you will focus on improving community health through education, planning, and direct nursing care. As part of an interdisciplinary team, the RN will address public health challenges and ensure responsiveness to community needs. Ideal candidates will possess a diploma in Practical Nursing and must meet all registration requirements from the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience working as a Registered Practical Nurse is mandatory.
  • Experience in Public Health is an asset.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team.

Full-Time, Contract, up to 17 months

Overall Job Responsibility:

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) combines knowledge from public health science and nursing science. The RPN focuses on promoting, protecting, and preserving the health of populations. The RPN works with individuals, families, groups and the community according to the program specific plans, policies and procedures of the Windsor- Essex County Health Unit, Ontario Public Health Standards, the Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice, and the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Standards and Guidelines for practice.

Key areas of Responsibility:

All competencies are based on the core functions of public health: population health assessment; health surveillance; disease and injury prevention; health promotion and health protection.

This list of duties is not all-inclusive and may be modified as public health programs change and as health unit need requires.

Specific duties include:

  • Monitor the health status of individuals and families under care and develop appropriate health plans.
  • Investigate health problems and health hazards in the community, including prevention and control of communicable diseases.
  • Promote the health of individuals and families through informing, educating, counseling, and appropriate intervention.
  • Seek to engage and establish partnerships in the community to address public health issues
  • Assist with the development of policies and plans that support individual and community health efforts.
  • Communicate and interpret such policies and plans to the public and community agencies. This includes planning and managing a client caseload, including coordination of intra- and inter-agency services.
  • Under the direction of the Medical Officer of Health, assist with enforcement of public health laws and regulations.
  • Link individuals, families, and the community with needed resources. This includes providing population-based public health nursing services in community settings as directed. This also includes providing services aimed at the promotion of health and the prevention of disease in individuals, families, and groups.
  • Take a leadership role in training, advising, and orientating public health staff and other community professionals. This also includes participation in the provision of public health educational experiences for nursing students and participation in professional development.
  • Carryout public health nursing functions according to standards set forth by the Nursing Act, 1991, College of Nurses of Ontario, the Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards, 2003, the Ontario Public Health Standards, 2021 and the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Evaluate the effectiveness, accessibility, and quality of personal health services. This includes accurate and appropriate documentation of individual and family interventions.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively in interprofessional teams.
  • Review evidence-based literature and best practice guidelines to provide evidence-based interventions and care.
  • Assure access to primary health care for all residents through referral or actual provision of the service.
  • Foster the understanding and promotion of health equity and the social determinants of health that impact residents of Windsor and Essex County.
  • Maintain professional competence by participating in relevant professional development opportunities as applicable.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications:

Education, training, & experience

  • Diploma in Practical Nursing from an accredited Ontario college
  • Current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse with no restrictions
  • Previous experience working as a Registered Practical Nurse is a requirement
  • Previous experience working as a nurse in Public Health is an asset

Other Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of Ontario Public Health Standards
  • Proficiency with current computer applications (Examples: Microsoft Office-Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize workload
  • Immunizations and TB screening as per WECHU policies
  • Satisfactory vulnerable persons police clearance
  • CPR/AED current certification
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends as necessary
  • A valid Ontario Driver’s Licence, access to a reliable motor vehicle during working hours, and 2 million dollars in liability insurance

This position includes the option of hybrid work, whereby employees may be able to work remotely or from the office, based on departmental needs, job duties and personal work preferences. The successful candidate must reside within the province of Ontario and must be available to attend the office upon request.
