Job summary

The Gathering Place is seeking an experienced Human Resources Advisor to support and enhance our people and workplace practices in St. John’s, NL.

This permanent full-time role reports to the Director of Operations and focuses on providing guidance to managers and staff across HR functions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Business Administration with a focus in Human Resources, Employment Relations, or a related field. Equivalent education and experience will also be considered.
  • Three (3)+ years of human resources experience, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of employment legislation, HR best practices, and employee relations principles.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively manage competing priorities.
  • CPHR designation, or progress toward designation, is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advice and support to managers and employees on HR policies, procedures, employment legislation, and collective agreement interpretation.
  • Support employee and labour relations matters, including conflict resolution, workplace investigations, and grievance administration.
  • Take the lead role on recruitment and selection activities, including job postings, candidate screening, interviews, reference checks, and onboarding processes.
  • Support the development, implementation, and review of HR policies, procedures, and workplace practices to ensure compliance and alignment with organizational needs.
  • Coordinate attendance management, disability management, workplace accommodations, and WorkplaceNL matters, including return-to-work planning and case documentation.
  • Support workplace health and safety initiatives, policies, and programs, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and organizational requirements.
  • Participate in employee engagement, wellness, and organizational development initiatives that support a positive workplace culture.

The Gathering Place is a community health centre located in downtown St. John's that provides a range of programs and services to individuals experiencing poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, and other barriers. Each day, staff and volunteers work together to provide meals, health services, housing supports, and social programs in a safe and welcoming environment.

We are seeking an experienced Human Resources Advisor to support and enhance the organization's people and workplace practices. This role serves as a trusted resource to leaders and employees, providing guidance and support on a wide range of human resources matters while helping ensure HR programs and processes are delivered consistently and effectively across the organization.

The Human Resources Advisor supports a broad range of HR functions, including:

  • Employee and labour relations
  • Recruitment and onboarding
  • Attendance and disability management
  • Policy administration
  • Employee engagement and experience initiatives

The role requires strong judgment, relationship-building skills, and a practical approach to supporting operational needs while ensuring compliance with legislative, collective agreement, and organizational requirements. Working closely with managers and staff, the Human Resources Advisor contributes to creating a respectful, supportive, and engaged workplace culture.

What You Bring
