Job summary

Big Country Equipment is a BC-based heavy equipment service and repair company serving Western Canada, with a team of 200+ and 24/7 operations. The role focuses on diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining equipment in mining, construction, forestry, and oil & gas sectors at customer sites.

This position requires field-skill proficiency, CAT/Komatsu/Hitachi/JD experience, and strong diagnostic abilities across mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and drivetrain systems.

Qualifications

• Three or more years of recent experience diagnosing and repairing heavy or off-road equipment.
• Experience with 793 CAT haul trucks is an asset.
• Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills across mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, transmission, and drivetrain systems.
• Experience using computerized diagnostic software and testing equipment.
• Valid provincial trade certification as Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician preferred.
• Experience with Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, or John Deere equipment preferred.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose, maintain, and repair heavy mining and construction equipment.
• Perform field-service repairs on multiple equipment types and brands, including Caterpillar (CAT), Komatsu, Hitachi, and John Deere.
• Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, transmission, and drivetrain issues.
• Repair or replace transmission components, differential gears, driveshafts, and related drivetrain components.
• Use computerized diagnostic software, testing equipment, and technical information to identify required repairs.
• Complete scheduled maintenance, preventive maintenance, breakdown repairs, and unscheduled work orders.
• Prepare accurate and detailed service reports.
• Test repaired equipment to confirm safe and proper operation.
• Recommend required repairs and opportunities to improve equipment reliability.
• Follow all company safety procedures, customer-site requirements, and regulatory standards.
• Maintain all required trade certifications, licenses, and site training.
• Report to work fit for duty and prepared to complete assigned field-service work safely.
• All related duties as assigned.

Job description

Base Rate: $62.50/hr.
OT: 4 hours daily, paid at $93.75/hr.
Schedule: 14X14 - 12-hour days
Night Shift Premium: $1.25/hr.
Accommodations: Camp
Flights Paid: Yes, fly into the location from any major airport in Canada
Tools Provided: Tools will be provided
Travel Allowance: Paid up to 8 hours at regular rate for the day before and after a 14-day shift

Requirements:

• Three or more years of recent experience diagnosing and repairing heavy or off-road equipment.
• Experience with overhauling 793 CAT haul trucks will be considered an asset.
• Recent field-service experience is considered an asset, ideally working independently from a service truck.
• A valid provincial trade certification as a Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician is preferred.
• Licensed Truck and Transport Mechanics or Agricultural Equipment Technicians may also be considered when they have relevant heavy-equipment repair experience.
• Red Seal certification is an asset but is not required for candidates who hold a valid provincial trade certification recognized in the province where they will work.
• Experience repairing mining equipment is preferred; however, strong experience with construction, forestry, agricultural, or other off-road equipment may also be considered.
• Experience with Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, or John Deere equipment is preferred.
• Experience repairing surface drills, electric shovels, or hydraulic shovels is an asset.
• Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills across mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, transmission, and drivetrain systems.
• Experience using computerized diagnostic software and testing equipment.

All Successful Candidates Must:

• Be proficient in English, both verbal and written.
• Have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
• Provide a minimum of 2 direct supervisor references.
• Pass a Criminal Record check.
• Provide a clean 5-year driver’s abstract.
• Pass an 8-panel drug test (including marijuana) and an alcohol breath test.
• Be able to lift 50 lbs. comfortably.
• Not seeking subcontractor roles (we are not offering subcontractor opportunities at this time).
