Job summary

FMi Logistics Incorporated, headquartered in Calgary, is seeking a Freight Team Lead to guide freight coordinators and specialists across LTL/FTL operations. You will drive performance, ensure timely quotes and responses, and collaborate with carriers and customers to improve service quality.

Applicants should have at least 5 years in transportation or logistics, strong negotiation and communication skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education preferred
  • Equivalent direct work experience will be considered
  • Experience in transportation or logistics is a strong asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Ability to train, encourage and motivate staff
  • Proficient in intermediate selling and negotiation skills
  • Experience in invoice resolution and adjustment
  • Min 5 years related experience in transportation or logistics

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and support team members, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Ensure daily reports, freight quotes, and customer responses are completed accurately and on time.
  • Calculate, negotiate, and quote competitive Rail Intermodal, FTL, and LTL rates using carrier contracts, spot quotes, and tools.
  • Coordinate shipments with shippers, consignees, dispatch, and carriers to support timely freight movement.
  • Monitor shipments, obtain carrier reference numbers, and support tracking and service follow-up.
  • Review carrier charges, resolve LTL disputes and invoice discrepancies, and complete billing hand-off activities.
  • Manage claims documentation, update tracking records, and coordinate with Accounts Payable.
  • Identify opportunities to grow client relationships, improve service delivery, and reduce costs.
  • Contribute to team planning and support freight team objectives.
  • Maintain and update SOPs related to client service and freight operations.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Job Summary:
Reporting to the Manager, the Freight Team Lead (LTL) provides day-to-day leadership, guidance, and support to freight coordinators and specialists to help achieve departmental goals. This role fosters a positive, inclusive, and accountable work environment while supporting team development, performance, and continuous improvement. The Team Lead also serves as a key point of contact for customers, addressing inquiries, resolving issues, and working with internal teams and external partners to improve service quality and customer satisfaction.
Job Duties:
  1. Lead, coach, and support team members, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
  2. Ensure daily reports, freight quotes, and customer responses are completed accurately and on time.
  3. Calculate, negotiate, and quote competitive Rail Intermodal, FTL, and LTL rates using existing carrier contracts, spot quotes, and freight-matching tools.
  4. Coordinate shipments with shippers, consignees, dispatch, and carriers to support timely and issue-free movement of freight.
  5. Monitor shipments, obtain carrier reference numbers, and support tracking, tracing, and service follow-up.
  6. Review carrier charges, resolve LTL disputes and invoice discrepancies, and complete required billing, order closure, and accounting hand-off activities.
  7. Manage claims documentation, update tracking records, communicate with vendors through resolution, and forward final payments to Accounts Payable as required.
  8. Identify opportunities to grow existing client relationships, improve service delivery, maximize revenue, and reduce operational costs.
  9. Contribute to team-based business planning and support freight team and management objectives.
  10. Maintain and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to client service and freight operations.
  11. Perform additional duties as required.
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Post-secondary education is preferred; equivalent direct work experience will be considered.
  • Transportation, logistics, freight, or supply chain education and knowledge are considered a strong asset and may be reflected in compensation.
Qualifications/Skills:
  • MIN 5 years related experience in transportation or other related logistics and supply chain experience.
  • Ability to work with deadlines and prioritize workload.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
  • The ability to train, encourage and motivate staff through excellent verbal and oral skills.
  • Proficient in intermediate selling and negotiation skills.
  • Experienced in invoice resolution and adjustment.
