Job description

We are looking for a Financial Controller to join our team who will work with the Financial Consultant and the accountant team to provide accurate information to the Board of Directors, including analysis, budgeting, forecasting and preparing financial reports.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Managing all finance and accounting operations.
  2. Coordinating and directing the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts and report variances.
  3. Preparing and publishing timely monthly financial statements.
  4. Managing the accounting operations, Billing, GL & Counsel, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting, including reviewing journal entries, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and statutory reporting.
  5. Establish and monitor internal controls to ensure that accounting activities follow established legal regulatory and company policies and procedures.
  6. Prepare, analyze and present monthly, quarterly and annual operating results for each department.
  7. Define, measure, analyze, improve and control current processes which impact customer quality and influence internal operating efficiency.
  8. Provide strategic analysis as required to drive improved decision-making.
  9. Work with external auditors, audit committee and Board of Directors.
  10. Prepare and present financial information for quarterly and annual reports.
  11. Assist with the management of foreign exchange transactions.
  12. Aid the Financial Controller in managing the research and development program for CRA and accounting requirements.
  13. Work with the sales team on product pricing, costing and margins.
  14. Responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of financial information.
  15. Implement and manage interforth respect to financial policies, processes and procedures.
  16. Provide advice and guidance on all accounting matters, including financial systems, record keeping, analysis, and reporting.
  17. Assist the Financial Controller in setting the priorities within the accounting group.
  18. Coordinate the year-end audit and preparation of audited financial statements.
  19. Coordinate all other customer and government audits.
  20. Responsible for preparing monthly financial statements and external reporting to financial institutions, ensuring all reporting requirements are met.
  21. Responsible for all other financial reporting to various companies and agencies (Bank, Insurance, Stats Can, etc.).
  22. Generate reports of performance against budgets.
  23. Support new systems or project selections and implement them from a strategic finance and internal control perspective.
  24. Ensure rapid and consistent collection of receivables by refining and implementing control mechanisms.
  25. Assign and authorize cheques, purchase orders and invoices.
  26. Promote and maintain positive corporate relations with the financial community, formulating accounting policies, procedures and controls.
  27. Hiring, training, mentoring and supervising accounting staff.
  28. Other related duties and required or assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Business/Accounting, with an advanced degree or professional or close to earning accounting designation (such as CA, CPA, CGA, CMA) preferred.
  2. CPA Designation required.
  3. Extensive experience and knowledge of all corporate accounting and financial management aspects. Thorough knowledge of all relevant Federal, Provincial and local requirements regarding financial records, pension, profit sharing, and the like is essential.
  4. Proficient communication, interpersonal and organizational skills are vital to the role.
  5. Experience overseeing audits performed by external audit firms.
  6. Financial analysis, budgeting and some strategic planning experience.
  7. Knowledge of accounting principles, practices and applications, budget preparation and analysis techniques.
  8. Advanced knowledge of MS Office and Excel; ability to adapt to and learn new software.
  9. Knowledge of publicly traded companies.
  10. Good project management skills and the ability to motivate teams to produce quality work within tight timeframes.
  11. Professional written and verbal communication skills.
  12. Good problem-solving skills and the ability to make the necessary decisions to move the work forward.
  13. Knowledge of ERP computer systems is an asset.
  14. Able to work efficiently as a part of a team and independently.
  15. High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts.
  16. Able to work well under pressure and meet set deadlines.
  17. Good organizational, time management and prioritizing skills.
  18. Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
  19. Attention to detail in all areas of work.
